This link is to a great photo of a performance of The Supremes singing NOTHING BUT HEARTACHES from late summer 1965 on The Discophonic Scene, a nationally syndicated Philadelphia TV dance show hosted by Jerry Blavat, that is still very vivid in my mind. And for one simple reason: It was, unquestionably for me, the best TV appearance by The Supremes I've ever seen. They sang live to a recorded backing track, with the show's dancers dancing up a storm right in front of them as they performed. And there was an incredible back-and-forth exchange of energy and joy between the two--the dancers feeding off the performance and music of The Supremes and, in turn, The Supremes feeding off the excitement and great dancing of the dancers. And then there was this amazing rapport that Jerry had with The Supremes [[that's Jerry in the photo). It was obvious that The Supremes were just as thrilled to be with Jerry on his show as Jerry was to have them. As they sang on the staircase progression that you see in the shot, it was the quintessential Supremes moment in all its glory--sleek, sexy, polished, gorgeous, and those sensational voices of theirs. And with the added attraction of Diana, Mary, and Florence moving to the music that was finely choreographed and, at the same time, lively and joyous in a way that I had never quite seen them do before. Unfortunately, a copy of this particular performance was not kept since videotapes, at that time, were large and costly and, therefore, often re-used by most TV stations.

The photo also appears within Jerry's 2011 book, YOU ONLY ROCK ONCE, as well as on its cover:

Are you with me so far? Well then, here's that BONUS:

Some info on Jerry Blavat's shows PLUS a 4-min. compilation kinescope from some of Jerry's various programs--one of which contains very brief but extremely rare footage of Martha & the Vandellas:

Yes indeedy, Tbfxt, that Tom & Jerrio recording was hugely popular in Philadelphia.

I had contacted the office of Jerry Blavat to find out about the NOTHING BUT HEARTACHES performance but, alas and alack, that show was not retained.

However, some other things have been--now on DVD, and recordings on CD. Here's a listing of what's available for purchase:

I have not yet ordered from them myself but I have had several contacts with them. And they have always been extremely helpful and considerate to me. Anyone who decides to order from them might want to call the telephone number shown in the site first.

Jerry Blavat is still producing major music events to this day. He just put on one that featured Darlene Love and Baby Washington, among others.

And he's still on radio:

MONDAY - FRIDAY:
