Diana Ross Working Rehearsal
[[1352)
Details: Diana Ross
Majestic Theatre San Antonio
San Antonio, TX
Mon, 01/28/13
04:00 PM

This was mentioned on another site, and I didn't know if it meant what it seems. Apparently so. Diana starts her live dates tomorrow and the San Antonio show is sold out. In a first, she opened up her rehearsal to fans and the public. Here is a great story of the rehearsal. Pictures are included on the website.

************************************************** *************

Diana Ross is the boss at rehearsal for Tuesday’s show

Singing superstar Diana Ross, 68, [[she turns 69 March 26) proved she, indeed, is the boss with a rehearsal show for several hundred fans who paid $25 per ticket to see the former Supremes headliner in action at the Majestic Theatre Monday night.

Her show, based on the rehearsal, will be a showstopper, also at the Majestic and no doubt filled with heartfelt multiple standing O’s [[she received a trio of them at her rehearsal) Tuesday night.

And fans, especially those who have followed her since her days as lead singer for the 1960s girl group, The Supremes, are in for a trip down memory lane — and a surprise: if you haven’t seen La Ross in ages she looks ageless, even in her laid-back oh-so-casual rehearsal look of black sleeveless tank top over black slouchy pants tucked inside Uggs. [[Occasionally, she’d take the chill off with a hoodie emblazoned on its backside with the words “Life,” “Nature,” “Love.”)

And her pipes ain’t bad either. With 50 years of showbiz Baby Loving under her blinged-out belt, she still is in full control of that voice: so identifiable, sweetly light with terrific tone, all backed by a powerful presence — and all that glorious hair. And this was just a rehearsal with her back to the audience most of the time, with not a sequin in sight, but lots of love and admiration from Ross to her fans.

Ross admitted to the audience, “We’ve never done this before but I decided to open up the rehearsal. Rehearsals are really private, but we’re trying to open up a whole lot of stuff,” she said sweetly to applause and cheers as the rehearsal began shortly before 4 p.m. “This will go till 7 p.m.,” she cautioned. More applause. [[The rehearsal concluded a few minutes before then.)

Ross told her fans: “We won’t sing the songs all the way through. It’s more of a sound check.”

She also apologized to her fans: “I’ll have my back to you so I’m sorry.” But even with her backside in full view, she didn’t forget that her fans were there and often looked over her shoulder and flirted with them or waved and smiled a lot.

She reminded them that recently “I fell off the stage in India” [[reportedly at a November concert for Naomi Campbell’s billionaire boyfriend) “and broke my ankle. It’s sore if I’m on it for too long.” [[Later, she had a slight stumble as she chatted with gospel singers from San Antonio who will perform backup for her for a few songs, but Ross didn’t fall. The audience applauded after she kept her balance, smiled and shrugged it off with a sense of humor.)

With a nine-member band and three back-up singers, Ross occasionally offered stage and sound check advice to those around her. She introduced bandmates during a song and touted the chops of her back up singers. A high table had a box of tissues, bottled water and show notes on it that she often referred to. She spent a good portion of the rehearsal practicing with a San Antonio gospel choir comprised of singers from several churches throughout the city.

“We’re rehearsing, we not really performing,” she told the group and then shared a story with the choir and the audience about performing for President Barack Obama at a holiday concert in December. After a few more rehearsal rounds with the choir she told them: “You did really, really good. And you’re good dancers, too. I love your smiles!”

And then, perhaps sensing that the audience was growing restless because they were there to hear the lady sing the blues or perhaps a Supremes oldie or a signature Ross disco song, she tore into a litany of songs that brought people to their feet and dancing in the aisles: “Do You Know Where You’re Going To [[Theme from “Mahogany”), followed by the rousing “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” [[which she revealed will end Tuesday night’s show) that was met with a minutes-long standing ovation and more cheering and declarations of love from the fans to which Ross replied: “And we were not suppose to be entertaining!”

Then came “Reach Out and Touch [[Somebody’s Hand) with the S.A. choir joining in, Ross told the singers “Right about here we get the audience to sing with us” and then turning to the audience there for the rehearsal “and make you guys work.”

Singing with Ross wasn’t work — Tuesday night’s turnout proved it was a privilege as her adoring fans also sang along to Ross singing Gloria Gaynor’s empowerment anthem “I Will Survive” with many moving closer to the stage, dancing. After a couple more songs, Ross opened the rehearsal with song requests and delivered the goods with her on-the-spot spot-on obligation to sing her heart out. [[I hope she does this at Tuesday night’s show; it was an unforgettable connection she made with appreciative fans on Monday.)

She ended up singing two: “Upside Down” and “The Boss” as more requests were shouted: “Baby Love,” “Stop! In the Name of Love” and “Someday We’ll Be Together.”

“What happened to our rehearsal?” Ross reminded the audience as she laughed along with them. “Let me save some voice for tomorrow night,” she said, affirming her appreciation to everyone, adding “We didn’t’ expect this!”

As she gathered her belongings from the table she looked at her fans, now clustered at the edge of the stage, and said, “This is it you wonderful, wonderful people. We love you. See you later, alligator!”

And with that she was slowly escorted off the stage, stopping briefly to sign a couple of autographs as fans waited until her head of curly hair was out of sight.

That was a wonderful read. One of the requests that the fans shouted for was SOMEDAY WE'LL BE TOGETHER. I have seen her in concert dozens of times as a soloist and never heard her sing this song. Does anyone know why she does not include this in her act?

I wonder what that could possibly mean?

thats part of her magic - just hand her a mike and something speacil happens..a few years ago she was at a rehearsal for some Billie Holiday tribute event..in attendance was a hardened Rolling Stone writer who had never liked her music by the time she had rehearsed 'Strange Fruit" once at sound check..the journalist had totally changed his perception of her and was now a huge admirer of her craft..when Oprah handed her the mike on the 2000 interview she burst into a few bars of "Its My Turn" acapella and there was that magic on display take away the musical instruments and Diana can still sell a song - its a god given gift that she has shared with the world..she is supreme.

I attended something similar several years ago. Linda Ronstadt opened up a rehearsal to her fans, but it was really more of a full-on show with just maybe 2 or 3 interruptions for technical changes. I guess Ronstadt didn't need too much fine-tuning! Still fun to see, though. I'm sure Diana's rehearsal was just as great.

This might be more special to fans than the real show.

I've never heard of people paying to see a rehearsal.

But you have to admit, it is a good way for Diana Ross to make extra money.

Well if you’re a performer with a dedicated ban of die hard fans with money to spare, it makes sense from a business standpoint to sell tickets for a rehearsal or sound check. On the other hand, there are other acts with dedicated fans who are happy enough to wait in line outside the venue the afternoon before a show and just hear the soundcheck and go on twitter, facebook and fan forums to speculate about what songs might make the set that night.

It aint nothing new ..die hard Garland fans would record any soundcheck Judy did in the 60s..

I know fans paid to get into Media Day today down in New Orleans for the Superbowl, but this is the first time I've heard of people paying to get into a singer's rehearsal.

I've never heard of people paying to see a rehearsal.

I've never heard of that, either. I've loved watching Martha rehearse and do soundchecks, she really knows how to whip the band into shape and get the sound she needs from them. Her amount of techinical musical knowledge is pretty impressive.

BIG NAME star rehearsals are usually private as Diana stated they were trying something new.

I don't think ANYBODY'S rehearsals are public...it just surprises me that someone would charge money for a such a thing. Next thing you know, she'll charge admission to let fans watch her get her extensions put in. But if they want to part with their money, that's up to them.

I would have paid to attend Diana's rehearsal. I think it would have been fascinating to witness her process for putting a show together.

I can see opening up a rehearsal for the media [[reporters and photographers) with the condition that they understand it's a rehearsal and any stories they do will be used for promotion to help ticket sales.
But I think Diana Ross has discovered that some of her fans will pay money to see her rehearse or do anything. Most rehearsals are usually private. It's when the artist is getting things together and mistakes are sometimes made and problems worked out - things that some artists don't want the public to see. It will be interesting to see what she charges fans for next.

Rising to prominence as the lead vocalist of the pioneering Motown trio the Supremes, Detroit native Diana Ross counts a Guinness World Record for Most Successful Singer of All Time [[1993), a Kennedy Center Honors [[2007), and a Lifetime Achievement Grammy [[2012) among her accomplishments. Just after launching a solo career in 1970, Ross earned a Best Actress nomination for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lady Sings The Blues. The empowering dance anthem “I’m Coming Out,” the campy Michael Jackson-penned “Muscles,” and the touching Marvin Gaye tribute “Missing You” are among the gems afforded by a landmark ’80s-era $20 million RCA contract. The icon plays the Majestic as part of a string of dates rumored to be leading up to a new album and world tour. Sold out [[$129-$588 at stubhub.com and concertticketcenter.com); 8pm Tue, Jan 29; The Majestic Theatre, 224 E Houston, [[210) 226-3333, majesticempire.com. I was at the working Rehearsal, and yes, it was 36.25 with Ticketmaster fees which is more than I last paid to see Dionne Warwick [[31.00) and Mary Wilson [[26.50) in concert! The concert was an instant sellout. The promoter and the venue tried to get an extra date OR TWO but she declined - apparently she only wants to do a certain number of shows per outing - this one being 8. So much for needing the money LOL [[although with what other divas are doing to make a fast buck these days, I can see why someone not knowing much about Ross could think that). This was suggested as a way to appease the slew of complaints the venue received asking for an extra date. Miss Ross didn't want to disappoint anyone, and agreed. According to several of her band members, she expected "a few handfuls" of fans. The fee was to cover standard venue protocol for insurance, ticket takers, box office personnel, ushers etc. When Diana came out, she was shocked beyond words to see nearly 1000 fans and instantly began to apologize to them as she thought they must have been misled into thinking this was a show. We assured her that we knew what this was. Several times she'd turn around and say things like, "this isn't a few people - this is an AUDIENCE! I feel terrible with my back to you" and would turn to us every so often to explain again. It was cute. So she got up to talk to us again and got heartfelt cheers just for standing. Saw me and came over and said, "What are YOU doing here? How did you even KNOW about this? Was it advertised???" And blew me a kiss. She really seemed touched so many were there and, master that she is at holding crowds, made it a supreme event. People kept arriving as they got off work and she began to do entire songs some acapella - all great in amazing voice, taking requests etc. It was a joy to see the master at work in a new setting and nail it. No costumes, no stage makeup, no video, no trappings - just the lady and her songs. No one can touch her. Everyone had a great time. The show the next night was a love-in. With scalpers getting $200-$600 for last minute tickets on the corner, fans were wild with love for The Supreme Supreme - who put on one hell of a show. Nearly 69, still recovering from her broken ankle - which she discussed with us - she tore the place apart and after her final, in street clothes final, encore, the crowd still stayed and cheered for quite a while with the house lights up. Go bless Berry Gordy for seeing this rare gift in her: 50nyears later, she's still getting raves from critics and fans alike.

Supremester, thanks for sharing your experience with us and explaining how the pay for rehearsal came to be. It had to be a great experience and a bargain. If I had the opportunity, I would definitely have gone to see her rehearse her show.

It's not that hard to sell out a venue with 2,300 seats. Mary sold 2,450 here in Columbia, MO. Vicki Lawrence and Mama sold out the 3,000 seat lyric theatre in Kansas City. But good that all the fans had fun. Nice that they enjoyed themselves.

You're quite welcome. Most of the people came just to see her because they couldn't see the show. Some were going to both. We bought our tix 20 minutes after they went on sae and got row R. Well....ya know, Row "R".....plus, my good Ross buddy from over 30 years ago is quite ill and so I bought front row tix from a scalper for 125 per. We were all seated when she arrived at 4. It was cool to see them all so happy to see each other, they are such a family - some for over 30 years. They genuinely love her and she them. Had I not snuck into a few sound checks over the years, I might have expected a diva instead of a warm, fun-but-businesslike global music icon. The best part was watching her adjust her plan when she saw the huge crowd. She rspects her audiences and it shows. She did NOT want them to go home disappointed - and they didn't. There was a sea of fans taking pics and they were all saying something to the effect of "OMG OMG OMG - it's HER" they love Miss Ross in San Antonio. Audience breakdown: 75% female, average age 50, 50% Hispanic, 35% White 15% Black plus the usual 10-15% Gay. In Austin: 60% male, average age: 34 60% white, 25% Black 15% Hispanic - very, very few Gays that I could tell [[however, there were over 30 of us in our group and 20 or so are gay. In Sarasota, the average age had to be 75 and maybe 5 blacks and no hispanics. Seriously, the crowd was so old, you hear the arteries hardening when you entered the theatre. Miami: average age 40 equal racial mix. Her demo interests me: more and more young people at her shows. Straight guys in their 20's with their girlfriends singing Take Me Higher verbatim. She draws the most diverse crowds I've seen - especially for tickets over $100.00

Jill: That's great Mary drew so well - was it the usual show in St Charles or Lena or Up Close? Tell us about it! That's an unusually large crowd for her - how much were the tickets? She must have been thrilled. Good for her!
