Lovely, lovely links, Kamasu. Thank you for posting. Tantalizing, terrific Tammi. Today. Tomorrow. And always.

I have always been disturbed by the career of Tammi Terrell because she had a wonderful voice and it seemed like the only recordings of hers that blew up were the ones she did with Marvin Gaye. She had a great voice and some of her songs [[not all of them) sounded like hit material to me and I KNOW [[even before she passed) she could have had hits. I love Come On and See Me and Lone Lone Town. It was almost like her productions were not meant for the pop audience unless she was with Marvin. Have you ever had the feeling when you hear a record that its bound to be a hit. I never got that feeling with her solo material.

Stephanie - That's a really interesting take on Tammi's career at Motown, one that never occurred to me from that angle. Perhaps that she wasn't a major solo star before teaming up with Marvin--as Mary, Kim, etc. were--had something to do with it and the way Motown viewed her. Or as they were willing to promote her. For the life of me, I'll never understand how Tammi's recording of ALL I DO IS THINK ABOUT YOU never even saw the light of day until many years later when it finally escaped the confines of the vaults. To my ear, that one had 'Hit' written all over it. Tammi is sensational on it, and she and that tune were a perfect match. And yet it remained hidden for a very long time. The nitty-gritty behind the Motown 'machine' still remains a mystery to me. Some things seem clear and evident but as you've pointed out, the rationale behind the path Tammi's career took at Motown is very difficult to figure out. The sad fact that her time here turned out to be so limited makes it all the more painful.

Blows my mind that Tammi knew Sam Cooke. But here is proof.

Tammi was around the block before she got to Motown. She was an industry veteran and a very talented live performer. My thing with Tammi and Motown is Motown didn't promote her, like they didn't promote much of the talent that signed. Thing is Motown probably only put their 100% in most of the Detroit acts, which could explain why MARVIN married into Motown since he came from D.C. Tammi being an outsider type of artist she was lucky to get the exposure she actually got in Motown prior to them teaming her up with Marvin Gaye because she did have hit material. Motown was just lame about the promotion. Plus Tammi was too R&B/soulful for what Motown was aiming for so that probably was another issue.

"All I Do", "I Can't Believe You Love Me", "Come On and See Me" and "This Old Heart of Mine" all could have been decent sized hits with promotion or more promotion. She could have been a cross-over star on her own. Being from outside Detroit and joining Motown, after they got rolling in 1964, hurt her chances with them.
