There's a shiny new No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, as Rihanna's "Diamonds" rises 2-1. The song dethrones Maroon 5's "One More Night" [[1-2) after a nine-week reign.

With her 12th Hot 100 topper, Rihanna ties Madonna and the Supremes for the fourth-most leaders in the chart's 54-year history. [[The Supremes' sum does not include Diana Ross' six solo No. 1s.) Only the Beatles [[20), Mariah Carey [[18) and Michael Jackson [[13; also not counting the Jackson 5's four No. 1s) have sent more titles to the top of the Hot 100.

Here is a recap of Rihanna's dozen dominators on the Hot 100:
2006, "SOS" [[three weeks at No. 1)
2007," Umbrella," featuring Jay-Z [[seven)
2008, "Take a Bow" [[one)
2008, "Disturbia" [[two)
2008, "Live Your Life" [[T.I. featuring Rihanna) [[six)
2010, "Rude Boy" [[five)
2010, "Love the Way You Lie" [[Eminem featuring Rihanna) [[seven)
2010, "What's My Name?," featuring Drake [[one)
2010, "Only Girl [[In the World)" [[one)
2011, "S&M," featuring Britney Spears [[one)
2011, "We Found Love," featuring Calvin Harris [[10)
2012, "Diamonds" [[one to date)

Having first led the Hot 100 the week of May 13, 2006, with "SOS," Rihanna passes Carey as the female artist to reach 12 No. 1s the fastest. Rihanna's six-year, seven-month span between her first and 12th leaders bests Carey's seven-year, one-month, two-week stretch. Among all acts, only the Beatles [[a rapid-fire, Beatlemania-fueled two years, four months and three weeks) and the Supremes [[five years, four months) reached the milestone more quickly.

"Diamonds" introduces Rihanna's seventh studio set, "Unapologetic," released yesterday. While she has now banked 12 Hot 100 No. 1s, she's yet to top the Billboard 200 album chart. Stay tuned to Billboard.com for projections on whether "Unapologetic" could grant Rihanna her first Billboard 200 No. 1 next week.

Pretty sad for someone who can't really sing and relies on g-strings and bump and grinds. I guess I'm showing my age.

no what's really sad is that I can only name one of her songs, "Umbrella". I did not know she had other hits. LOL!

As Walter Matthau once said of Barbra Streisand, Rhianna has all the talent of a butterfly's fart!
I remember seeing a clip of Rhianna on a show [[one of those 'before they were famous' type things) and she was as tuneful as something that's not tuneful at all. Just goes to show what hype, image and tinkering with recorded vocals can do.

One consideration of achieving a "number one" record today is that is doesn't have to sell a million copies as in years gone by.

This is sad. And to tell you the truth, I've never even heard "Umbrella," let alone the other "hits" and don't feel like I'm missing anything. BTW - A number 1 song never had to sell a million copies. Sales are one thing. #1's are rated on "spins" or airplay back in the day...sometimes listener's responses if it was more local chart.

Thank you! Times change. Records change. This doesn't bother me one bit. The world does not revolve around The Supremes or any of it's members.

And, Rihanna can sing about as well as Diana Ross.

To me, this charting by Billboard is a joke. Did "love the way you lie" chart for both Eminem and Rihanna separately? Now 'featured on' means your hit also? Do they count the Dells on Barbara Lewis's records in the Dells charting positions or as a Dell's million seller? What about the Four Tops; do they count "My Baby Loves Me" as one of the Four Tops hits? Billboard states that because "colabos" are commonplace they decided to count them as any of the artist's on the recording as "their" records, but the Motown artists colaborated with each other all the time, so now shouldn't they count also on each others records?

Yeah. And besides no other group besides the Beatles have more. They can't take that away from them. So it's whatever.

Great accomplishment for Rihanna whether you care for her music or not. Since she is constantly churning out singles and albums like they did in the sixties and seventies it helps her strike rate of hits grow faster than her competion who tend to take time off between albums. Im sure Universals download profits from these multi million selling digital hits have funded a few Hip O Select Motown projects along the way.....

Billboard always credits an artist only if they made the label of the single or download. Its been pointed out that featuring was kept to a minimum since it affected royalty payouts in the sixties. The labels these days love features as a way to create excitement about acts and call them event records. No one would be complaining if IGMYLM by DRATS/Temps had managed to be a Billboard number one like it was in Cash Box and Record World...

Blueskies, you are so right. I doubt anyone will know who she is in 50 years let alone have her gowns on display or playing private gigs for big bucks.

I'm not even going to try and sell her any AVON!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and everyone here at Soulful Detroit.

I know few of her songs but it seems she has moved into the realm of Diana, Aretha, Whitney, Beyonce, Alicia.

She is a major artist with a huge catalogue.

I think the biggest pitfall in trying to compare artists like these, and their chart histories, is that back in the 60s, there were few "genre specific" radio stations. Top 40 was everywhere and included the Supremes, Dean Martin, Rolling Stones, Beatles, CCR, and on and on. A No. 1 hit back then had a much bigger impact than a No. 1 now. It was heard by everyone. Even Mary Wilson said in her second book that when the "new" Supremes would sing their latest top 10 hits like "Nathan Jones," it seemed people in the audience didn't know the tunes; pop radio was already changing quite rapidly.

A similar parallel is the difference between a 60s sitcom which was seen by 20 million people on an off night to one today which considers itself successful if it's seen by 5 million, thanks to the multitude of choices and channels.

Not to take anything away from Rihanna [[an artist who I'm only vaguely familiar with more from the news accounts about her troubles with Chris Brown than her music), but I can't imagine her music will have the kind of impact that the Sups' did, or the decades-long "shelf life."

11-23-2012, 10:43 PM
We may not be talking about Rhianna 50 years from now as most of us will be dead, or very old and potentially in states of dementia. But she’s had enough hits that 50 years from now, people in their teens and 20s will hear her old songs and it will take them back to the time when they were young.

As for her chart feat, there is one caveat—some of them are duets or hip hop songs where she’s singing the hook. But she got the credit on the release and her name and voice were used to sell the song.

She’s not a great singer, but she has a hit factory team of producers behind her and her voice works for her hits. I like some of her songs like SOS, Umbrella, Disturbia and We Found Love.

Yeah they do get a good chunk from "Upside Down" and "I'm Coming Out" being sampled. They're still playing "Mo' Money" so I'm sure they still get a good paycheck from it. The check would've been better if the song returned to their respective publishing companies.

By the way, a lot of the Motown albums pre-1980 didn't sell well, or if they did, they were undervalued due to Berry's policy of not letting the RIAA audit his album and single sales. Most artists when Diana was Rihanna's age sold on singles. So did Diana when she went solo though she did have some fine-selling albums [[the two self-titled "Diana Ross" albums, "Lady Sings the Blues", "Touch Me in the Morning" and "The Boss"). "diana" was her first album in Motown to be certified platinum while "The Boss" was the first to be certified gold while her best-selling albums, "Lady" and "Diana" each sold 3 million. "Why Do Fools" was definitely a big album, it did over one million albums. "Silk Electric" and "Swept Away" sold half a million.

Today we live in a way different world than the world that existed when the Supremes were on top of the world. Some people here tend to forget about that though.

Good post Kenneth. The audiences for everything are so scattered these days that the impact is definitely lessened. Who knows if Rhianna will have a lasting impact. I only know here for the Chris Brown affair as well. But she seems to have an extensive body of work that has been successful. And she seems to have some sense of style and a look, both of which matter. Whether she has any brains is another matter; she may go the way of Barbra Streisand but she might go the way of Whitney Houston and she gives a lot of indications of the later.

A question about being professional and/or a professional. I suppose I am what you class "a professional" by occupation. It is irrelevant to how or what I post on here and how abrasive it can be. I am sure I am abrasive to Marv and Luke; they deserve it; they are routinely rude and ignorant to a soul music icon. Several people on here are quite pleased if I kick their ass from time to time. Many others abandoned SD because of them. So I make no apology for my reasoned ignorance from time to time.

but I can't imagine her music will have the kind of impact that the Sups' did, or the decades-long "shelf life."
Imagine it.

You never heard /read me claim shit. Least of all being a Diane Ross fan. It is quite the opposite. I am not a fan!

OK, it's cool. I'm just saying that "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" was a huge album with at least two top 10 singles from it, and one more single that were in the top 30. It came out near the end of 1981. Maybe you stopped listening to pop music by that time, I don't know.

I remember the buzz about Madonna tying with the Supremes when "Music" hit number-one way back in 2000.
Exactly! However, there are people here that live so far in the past that they fon't even know about things that happened in the 80s!

Yeah some people are still stuck in the '60s and '70s and went to sleep in the '80s. :)

I look at Rihanna as more of a Donna Summer type of artist. She followed orders in the beginning, but gradually took control, and, while she has the vocal chops, she doesn't always use them, and everything she does is for the music.

But, Ralph has made it clear that it is against the forum rules, and will not look back if he decides to ban someone for it, so be careful. There was another person on this thread who did the same thing a couple of days ago and is now gone.

Jobeterob, I'm not sure if you meant that question for me or not. I have not usually found comments you make to be abrasive, though I think once I took something you said as dissing the US and bristled at it. As I recall, we chatted about it "back channel" and it wasn't a big deal.

Being a fan of both ladies, I try to stay out of the Diane v. Mary fray, though at times it's hard to hold back at some of the things that get flung back and forth!

Have a good day.

From what I can gather from the last couple of posts, there is some disagreement going on. In all honesty, I don't see anything I can't live with. Just try and keep the conversation on topic and civil.

Gosh, no Kenneth. My apologies to you for that appearing that way.

I'm only abrasive to a couple people and they know who they are, and that's just fine too. They are abrasive to me and others too and it's simply a disagreement over how to treat Soul Music icons, be they Supreme or not.

I guess Rhianna is daring to reach the heights of popularity of certain Supremes and so the Supreme's make their usual return to Love and to haunt the Forum!

Rihanna lands first No. 1 album, Adele hits sales milestone
It's ladies ... er, day, on the Billboard charts, as both Rihanna and Adele have cause to celebrate.

For Rihanna, the seventh record was the charm and the 24-year-old singer now has her first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with "Unapologetic." The album debuted at the top of the chart after its release last week.

The disc, which infamously hosts a song featuring Rihanna's former ex and current pal Chris Brown, sold 238,000 copies. Her first single from "Unapologetic," "Diamonds," is still at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100.

And while we haven't heard from Adele since her "Skyfall" theme - granted, she's been busy with the birth of her first child – the Brit singer is still dominating album sales. Her sophomore album "21" was the top seller in 2011 and is on track to come out as the best-selling album of 2012, as well.

According to her label, "21" has surpassed 10 million copies sold in the States, making Adele the only female Brit or European artist to earn a Diamond Certification from the RIAA.

To go diamond in this age of sharing, streaming and stealing is quite a sales feat.
