I play this several times a day, and it never fails to move me.
It can be found on a Kent CD.

Spencer Wiggins was a true Memphis, soul man. But you almost never hear his name mentioned here in Memphis nor does his music get played much on the radio. I don[t think I've ever heard his records played on WDIA, although some of the independent soul stations may play some of his records occasionally. I love southern soul and have been getting deeper into it and "Country Soul." Country soul is soulful tunes recorded by white and black artists in Nashville and other southern locales.

That is an awesome track--thanks for sharing, Keith. I already have Spencer Wiggins' Goldwax recordings, but I can see that I need to get the Fame and XL recordings, too. "Once in a While [[Is Better than Never at All)" is one of my all time favorites, but "I Can't Be Satisfied [[With A Piece of Your Love)" is right up there with it.

Spencer & Percy came over to the UK a couple of years back [[to perform at Ady's weekender).
Both are really nice guys [[though their manager isn't; either a guy or nice to deal with).
They live down in Ft Lauderdale these days and are ministers I seem to recall.

Although Etta James' recording from 1967 is probably better known, but I like this version by Spencer Wiggins.

Spencer Wiggins and Freddie North are two southern soul artists who have both somehow
managed to fly under my radar until this day and I don't know how, especially since I spent
years chasing the cat in and out of juke joints ,house parties and after hours spots from Charlotte, NC to Savannah , Georgia...Amazing. I guess you're really never too old to learn something new every day. Thanks guys.....

I'd love to see more Southern soul discussed here. It was the other side of the 60s.

Here's some southern soul that sounds like it was recorded up north in Detroit.

Another country soul favorite. Sometimes it's not about who is singing, but what they're singing about.

Kam, some opinions, much like butt holes, you know the rest...
anyway, the Linda Carr simularity to Detroit recordings I think was not at all coincidental, a
lot of producers had a hard-on for the Motown sound and had a stonger voice than most of
the other singers who recorded sound alike hits...
As for Candi Staton, I've heard that title bestowed on several singers but Candi certainly sang like no one else could over a wide range of material even up and through the disco era.
Gotta play my Candi cds this weekend...
As far as Skip A Rope, I never really considered it country soul but I heard it a lot when I lived
down south and always thought it was a great song like a lot of the country music from Johnny Cash who recorded a lot of things that were deeper than the usual Hee Haw fare...
Willie Hightower is another underated singer who had one of those "something in the water" voices that seems to only come from black men in born in the south like Leslie Wilson of New Birth and J Blackfoot of The Soul Children...
All good stuff...

I guess this one would qualify as southern soul. I assume it was recorded in Miami, Fla., which some consider a part of the south. Anyway, it is a favorite on southern soul radio stations.

I always loved this early 70s song. My father owned this 45 but I bought the album.
