Hey there, Folks. Please join me on my radio show "Nightflight" tonight [[10/16/12 9P-12M ET/USA) for PART TWO of my tribute to Motown artist/composer/producer Frank Wilson, who sadly passed away on Sept 27,2012.There was so much wonderful material by Frank that I needed another show to come close to airing it all.
That's tonight....9P-12M ET/USA on WOMR 92.1 FM Provincetown and streaming live worldwide in digital stereo at www.womr.org [[http://www.womr.org/)
Thanks! John

PS....remember...no "Nightflight" next week [[10/23).. WOMR will air alternate programming during the 9P-12M ET slot. And I'll be back on 10/30 for an all new "Nightflight".
Thank you!

I wonder if Smokey ever recorded lead vocals to 'Til You Were Gone'. Andy or George, are you peeking in here tonight? If so, has anything additional been found for this track since 1995?

Perhaps, because various producers were experimenting to see how Jean Terrell would sound with the Andantes and then with Mary & Cindy. If these new Supremes were to make it right out of the box, the powers that be at Motown would likely expect the right combination & sound to do it. As Mary & Cindy had not been featured on the later hits, the public had become accustomed to the Andante's voices. Some probably deemed it best to keep the recent background sound intact. Others may have felt that Mary & Cindy's talents had been neglected & wanted to show that they still had what it takes to be dynamic [[background) vocalists.
Recall that from mid- June 1969- January 14, 1970, these 'new' Supremes had Berry's blessing, as he had agreed with Shelly Berger that Jean would be a great replacement for Diana Ross in the Supremes.

Methuselah2

Got to disagree with Carole. Any acceptance of The Andantes' sound by the public with Jean on lead was, in my opinion, due to the public's being misled into thinking it was actually Mary and Cindy singing on back-up.

I forgot all about that squeaking noise [[a chair?) in the background of 'Everybody's Got the Right To Love' .... microphones often pick up more than one wants them to, don't they?

carole cucumber

Methusela2,

I hear where you are coming from... but the background replacement issue wasn't about deception at that time. I just can't picture Motown reasoning that the main reason for using the Andantes would be to fool fans/the public'. By Mary Wilson's own admission, she was invited to participate in the recording of 'Love Child' but chose a vacation to be with Duke Fakir over a record that Berry assured her would be the big hit that the Supremes needed.
And to play devil's advocate, another side of this issue is that people just weren't paying attention as closely as they could have been.
Those who attended Supremes' live shows/ concerts should have noticed that Mary & Cindy singing live didn't sound exactly as they did on the songs that substituted the Andantes. They could have questioned why. But I don't recall much being asked about this at that time.
The Supremes performed 'Love Child' on two different occasions on the Ed Sullivan Show- lip-synching to the record as they premiered the new single and then, a second time, providing their own vocals. It seems that nobody made any noise about the obvious difference in the background vocals.

I think it's always going to be difficult to pinpoint why exactly back-up substitutes were used. For me, not using the group members is a real sore point. And a real slight to the group members. I understand steps will always be taken for expediency and cost-control. But I thought it would stop with the artists appearing on the label. Not mentioning that there were substitutes used at the time of the releases gives the public something other than what they paid for while keeping name-recognition front and center because it means so much to sales.

So that no one feels that they got shortchanged when they bought the 'Love Child' album, 'I'm Living In Shame' isn't on it. It's on 'Let the Sunshine In'. Hope you don't mind the slight clarification, Johnny.

Hulswood....thanks so much for your post!!! I appreciate your kind words. As you may know by now...I didn't have a show last night...but I'll be back on the air next Tuesday night [[not sure what the time will be for you in the Netherlands).
The podcasts can be found on the WOMR page on the left menu....called "spoken word" podcasts....search by date and find 1/12/12. You sadly will find only one part of my interview with Blinky Williams and her late husband William. Sorry there are not more....the powers that be take them down after a while due to limited bandwidth.
