Steve Mancha [[Clyde Wilson) came to Motown in mid 1963, when Gwen Gordy and Harvey Fuqua sold out to Berry Gordy and their Harvey/Tri-Phi/HPC/Message labels were "folded into Motown". He had been in a duo with Wilbur Jackson, as The Two Friends, but had also been a songwriter. So, he was given a songwriter's contract with Motown, but not hired as an artist. He stayed about a year at Motown, and got writing credits on a handful of recorded songs.

J.J. Barnes came to Motown in Berry Gordy's first "buyout" of Ed Wingate's Golden World/Ric Tic/Wingate Records, in early 1966. He recorded about 20 songs, but never had a release, due to Marvin Gaye feeling threatened, as J.J. sounded too much like him. He also left after about one year, after getting writing credits on a couple of songs.

Indeed!!

This must be the best known of J.J.s collaberations at Motown .. "Show Me The Way" by MARTHA REEVES & THE VANDELLAS, which came out as the "B" side of their big hit "Honey Chile" ..

There used to be some confusion about which "Barnes" was amongst the songwriters of this, and on the C.D. toofer of "Riding High"/"Sugar N' Spice" that came out in Britain in 2002 the songwriter was put as SIDNEY BARNES!!

Funnily the same year the original version by J.J.BARNES, with a different set of lyrics, came out on one of those Cellarful C.D.s, which should have put an end to all the confusion ..

J.J. BARNES - "[[Tell Me), Ain't It The Truth" ..

Some clever person on You-Tube has managed to mix the two versions together ..
