Since the R&R Hall of Fame likes to pick one of each group, the Marvelettes are placed at the '60s group category alongside Procol Harum and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Likely the Marvelettes could get the edge for the "sorry we didn't induct you when we should've" bag like the Miracles.

In terms of overall importance, I would pick them over the other two in a heartbeat. At least their lyrics made sense, which is more than you can say for one of the others.

Well please all fans who love the Marvelettes here is your chance go on line and vote for the Marvelettes. They are coming in next to last place at the moment just in front of Chic.

Remember the site will only account for about 10% of the entire voting process. There's still 600 folks who have to put their vote in for the top five, six or seven inductees they'll include.

If "N.W.A." or Public Enemy, or another "rap" act, is chosen ahead of Marvelettes, Donna Summer, Chic [[how ironic, Grandmaster Flash, who sampled them , was chosen ahead of them) or I still hope someday, Dionne Warwick, Barry White, Teddy Pendergrass, Mary Wells - I guess why not her too after all - I will question the election ethics of the RRHOF - again.

Someone hip me to how the r&r hall works, are there different categories[soul-r&b..ect.?]if so then by all means the marvelettes should be there under[soul]but if it's just under[rock and roll]then no because they aren't.

Nah all the acts inducted were classified as being rock and roll but under its blanket term. They don't divide groups by genre. To do that would probably upset a lot of people though.

Rush, Deep Purple and Heart are 1,2,3 in the Fan Poll. And the bottom 3 are The Meters, The Marvelettes, and Chic.

"Rock and Roll" started as "Rythm & Blues" by the way...

"Rock and Roll" started as "Rythm & Blues" by the way...

And back in those days, people used the terms "rock and roll" [[or "rock 'n' roll") for different reasons. In Pentecostal churches, it was "rocking and rolling" with Jesus. In secular settings like the bed with a partner, it was another term for sex. It wasn't until geniuses like Alan Freed started to name the actual music of it as rock and roll [["Rocket 88", "Sixty Minute Man", etc.).

When Motown was popular, its artists [[Marvelettes, Supremes, Miracles, Marvin, etc.) weren't even called "R&B" or "soul" artists, but "rock'n'roll artists" at a time when rock'n'roll was the name for a kid/teen-friendly genre. Wasn't until after Aretha and Sam & Dave in the late sixties were they ever referred to as "soul" artists and around that time, that's when most of Motown's music began to be called "soul" music. Before it was either rock'n'roll or "R&B" but Motown's sound was so pop friendly, people hesitated to call it R&B music. In fact the Marvelettes were hard to categorize. Some cast them as a soul group or R&B group or pop group and some others say they were purely a rock'n'roll act like they made the Supremes and Shirelles out to be. Martha and the Vandellas was an exception though.

By the 1970s, music from groups such as Deep Purple, Heart and Rush was being called just "rock" or "rock music". By then the term rock 'n' roll already had a sort of 50s / early 60s nostalgic feel to it - bringing to mind artists like Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis.

For me, the Marvelettes and other Motown acts fit under rock 'n' roll as well [[or better) than, say, Deep Purple. But what's in a name, anyway - it's great music whatever you call it.

And by the way, here's "Rock It For Me", recorded by Chick Webb and His Orchestra on 1 November, 1937, in New York City [[with Ella Fitzgerald on vocals), with the lyrics [[at 0:51) mentioning "rock 'n' roll" and "soul":

Now it's true that once upon a time
the opera was the thing
but today the rage is rhythm and rhyme
so won't you satisfy my soul with the rock 'n' roll

Has Mary Wells ever been nominated? If not hard to believe as she really was a trendsetter for so many female artists.

So far I can't find a list of all previous nominees. Not sure how reliable this website is, but it says that Mary Wells was nominated in 1986 and 1987.
