Are re-recordings covers? I've thrown "Greatest Hits" collections on the junk pile after putting them in and finding out that they were not the versions of songs that I've committed to cherished memory. Possible exception being alternate takes by Coltrane, Miles, and a few other ol' skool artists. I'd consider a cover version to be a different creative take on the same song, one that can't be confused with the original.

Otherwise, the "extended mix" [[aka "disco version") which often used the same vocal tracks but entirely different music, would be considered a cover song.

Actually P-Funk made quite a habit of covering and updating many of their recordings...
Funkadelic redid the orignal Parliament track Red Hot Mama as Red Hot Mamma as well
as I Call My Baby PussyCat as I Call My Baby [[ahem..) Pussy
Parliament did an update of Fantasy Is Reality with Glen Goins delivering a rollicking lead...
Cosmic Slop, the title cut of their Westbound album was re-done on Funkadelic's WB release Hardcore Jollies. The update was panned by some critics but I never agreed with those losers:)...

Not soul, but the first one that came to my mind was Neil Sedaka's "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do". I much prefer his 1975 lounge lizard version over the original.

Then, I thought of The Dells' "Oh, What A Night", but someone else beat me to it.

What about "Ain't No Sun Since You've Been Gone" by GLADYS KNIGHT & THE PIPS ..

There was a fiercly uptempo "stomping" version of it on their 1967 "Everybody Needs Love" L.P.

Tommy Edwards had a big hit with It's All In The Game in 1958. But it wasn't the first time he recorded it. He did it back in 1951, before rock & roll, and it had an entirely different sound to it than the 1958 hit.

Before their Mercury success, the Platters recorded eight songs for Federal. One song recorded during their Federal tenure, "Only You [[And You Alone)", originally written by their manager Buck Ram for the Ink Spots, was deemed unreleasable by the label and by the Platters themselves.

When the Platters contract ran out, they began to record for Mercury and their first release was a new version of "Only You". As soon as it hit the charts, Federal released the version they had held back. That version [[the original) is below. I like the Mercury version.

Aretha recorded two versions of TODAY I SING THE BLUES, the first in 1960, the second in 1969.

Diana recorded two versions of ENDLESS LOVE, both in 1981.

There are the two versions of "Go Away Little Boy" by MARLENA SHAW ..

The short [[original) version on Cadet from 1968ish and the long version on Columbia/CBS with the hilarious "Yu-Ma" intro that came out about ten years later.

somewhere that I first heard on wbgo. Then a few years later I heard, don't remember
where , an update of that update making 4 versions from her I've heard. I know the first 3 are on youtube, haven't found the fourth yet...It occurred to me recently that Marlena Shaw
was [[still is as she's still singing...) the Betty Wright of jazz...no nonsense straight talking
down to earth homegirl...

That figures Splanky .. I saw Marlena "Live" in London about 5 years back and she had a whole new intro to "Go Away Little Boy" .. mind you, if we include "Live" versions in arr&bee's original question then this will end up being a VERY long thread. :)

I loved the 1977 version, but never knew what "Yu-Ma" meant.
