A son of Detroit’s Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, was attacked at a gas station near Plymouth and Evergreen on Monday night on the city’s northwest side, a spokeswoman said this morning.

Eddie Franklin, 52, was attacked by three people – two men and a woman – and was undergoing emergency surgery, Franklin spokeswoman Gwendolyn Quinn said this morning. She did not release the name of the hospital, and his condition wasn't immediately known.

No additional details were available about the attack, Quinn said.

Detroit Police said they were looking into the matter but had no other information.

Eddie Franklin made a guest appearance on his mother’s latest release earlier his year, singing “His Eye Is On the Sparrow” on the the 12-track CD “A Woman Falling Out of Love.”

A gifted singer, Eddie Franklin also has sung for years at gospel concerts in the Detroit area.

Eddie Franklin was a suspect in a fall 2002 fire at a $1.6 million Bloomfield Township mansion his mother used for storage, but an investigation by the Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox’s Office later cleared him.

The home on Scenic Court was known at the time to be severely underinsured. Lost in the fire were Grammy awards, dresses and other items Aretha Franklin had intended to donate to the Smithsonian Institution or other similar group.

Aretha Franklin Aretha Franklin's son was severely beaten at a gas station in Detroit, the singing legend's spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Eddie Franklin was attacked Monday night and was undergoing surgery at a hospital, Gwendolyn Quinn said in a statement. She said three people may have been involved in the attack, but did not address a possible motive.

Quinn told The Associated Press she didn't have any additional information beyond the written statement.

Detroit police spokeswoman Eren Stephens said a female acquaintance was with Franklin just before the beating took place. The woman walked into the gas station, and when she returned, the assault had taken place, Stephens said.

Police said the woman then drove Franklin to the hospital, dropped him off and headed to a police station to file a report.

Stephens said investigators want to talk to Franklin about the circumstances of the attack once he's able to speak to them.

It's turning into a strange story.

Aretha's publicist says Eddie was having emergency surgery, but the hospital is now saying he checked himself in and out with minimal treatment.

Police want to talk to Eddie, but can't seem to find him. It doesn't help that he never filed a police report. It also seems that the address of the gas station in the publicist's statement was wrong, since there's no gas station on Plymouth and Evergreen.

Either something is fishy or Aretha needs to put an ad on Craigslist for a new publicist. I have a feeling it's a mixture of both.

Just as a side note: The story in the original post [[by Matt Helms) has been updated and now refers to her as "Motown Legend Aretha Franklin". Maybe someone isn't cut out for writing about the news... at least in Detroit.

Sounds a little suspicious like so many things. I wonder if he will file a police report or if the woman is someone he knows.

PEOPLE.com) -- Aretha Franklin's son was released from the hospital after undergoing surgery following an assault at a Detroit gas station, according to the singer's rep.

Doctors performed emergency oral surgery on Eddie Franklin, 52, who eyewitnesses say was severely beaten by three men on Monday night. He was discharged the next day.

No arrests have been made. Authorities are also looking for a female spotted in the vicinity of the attack.

"We're waiting for [Eddie] to file a police report," Detroit Police Sgt. Eren Stephens told the Detroit News. "We still need to talk to him."
