For acts like Gladys Knight and Natalie Cole, does the audience stay seated for most of the show and only get up to applaud a performance they truly enjoy? At the concerts I attend, the audience is pretty much on their feet for the entire show, with some sitting down during a ballad to rest their feet for a few minutes.

When I've seen both Gladys and Natalie in concert, the audience is usually really responsive, but not to the point of standing up throughout the show. Usually Gladys' THE WAY WE WERE, NEITHER ONE OF US, and MIDNIGHT TRAIN TO GEORGIA will illicit standing ovations.

I haven't seen Natalie do a full R&B show in quite some time, so I'm not sure what the response is now. For many years, I saw her doing the UNFORGETTABLE type songs, which don't really lend themselves to a crowd standing up. Although I remember seeing a few couples get up during particularly romantic numbers.

The only concerts I've attended where the audience never seemed to sit down were those of Tina Turner and Donna Summer.

Good point…depends on the set list. A show that’s more about ballads or jazz or a show at a supper club type venue would lend itself to an audience inclined to remain seated. Gladys Knight will be performing at Coney Island Thursday night. I wonder if she’ll do more of a ballads show, or given the venue, put some more uptempo songs into the set?

I've seen Gladys many times, in venues ranging from concert halls to casinos to outdoor festivals. The show was basicially the same: a good mix of her hits [[both uptempo and ballads), a few covers, some comedy from Bubba, and maybe something from her most recent album. But always great vocals.

I think she might have done some different things when she had her Vegas show.
