Motown Audition Question

I learned something new while watching the Unsung episode for the Marvelettes. Berry told them to try and write something, come back and sing original material. Did he do this with any other girl groups? Did he say this to any other groups male or female? Was he looking for singer/songwriters in the early years of Motown?

They were a young startup organization so they were lookiing for original material. They didn't have the staff writers
they later became known for. Having her own original song, Bye Bye Baby, is what solidified the deal for Mary Wells
too.

So did the Velvelettes....they had two. There He Goes and Should I Tell Them...despite what the songwriter credits say.
