I happen to be a big fan of Diana Ross, and still find this funny. We Brits have a self-deprecatory sense of humour, and, because we are able to laugh at ourselves, expect others to be be able to do the same. Maybe some Americans just don't get this.

I think there is a difference in that the humour is directed at poking fun at a specific album cover. It's too ridiculous to be taken seriously.
