I had purchased this Motown 45 in 1981 and I remember being blown away by the female vocalist. From what I just discovered from listening to the song on You Tube, it looks like it was first released on Samarah out of South Carolina which means Motown probably licensed it.

Does anyone know more about this one-shot group or who the female lead may be? I have heard some talented and gifted singers cover this song [[Shirley Bassey, Linda Jones & Ben E. King instantly come to mind) but I gotta say this girl just but her own brand on this classic tune. Enjoy!

No place, that group was around for a minute and it's too bad they didn't have greater sucess. I've never seen the
Motown single version of it but I'll take your word for it. The lead on that was done by Debra Bailey whom I'm told is
still around but only singing Gospel music now...Debra left the group and was replaced by someone who's name I can't remember right now. I'll check around and see if I can get more details. Linda Jones's version has always been my favorite but Debra sang the mess outta, didn't she? She had her own technique which some other singers have tried
to adopt as their own....

Thanks, Splanky. I listened to two of the group's other songs from the 1980-1981 period but nothing grabbed me - most likely due to Bailey not being on lead. I'd like to hear those gospel recordings you mentioned. Well, I'm on the hunt now for some more Ms. Bailey! :D
