Plus THE SHADOWS .. who's hits were mainly in the early '60s .. they also backed CLIFF RICHARD on his records in the early days. TOM JONES and THE ROLLING STONES sales would be mainly in the '60s as well. But you are right that there wasn't much spare cash floating around here.

Also, I recall when I was 12-13 years old The Rubettes [["sugar Baby Love") was the bomb in the UK market... And I recall Leapy Lee's "Little Arrow" was a smash hit whit covers in various idioms, here in Spain "Las Flechas del Amor" by Karina... Or, take for example also the Matt Monro crooner's ballads with covers on spanish by himself [["Todo pasará"; "No puedo quitar mis ojos de ti",...), ... Perhaps the documentation by the author its simply inexistent...

I think that author is being a bit over-optimistic Manny as JERRY BUTLER never even had a Top 40 Pop chart entry in Britain. Those two early G&H "Iceman" L.P.s of his were big "hits" on the "Blues & Soul" L.P. charts, but those only covered sales in a few "specialist" shops, indicating that the L.P.s were steady, rather than strong, sellers. I recall that some of Jerry's records got a lot of airplay, notably "Moody Woman", but even then they didn't chart.

Dusty Springfield was indeed very popular here in the mid/late 1960s with 9 Top-10 entries, plus a Number 1 with "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me".

Manny .. MATT MUNROE was indeed British. He seemed to specialise in singing Film Themes, notably "Born Free" and "From Russia With Love", and his records used to be hugely popular with the "M.O.R./Adult" crowd in the 1960s. Funnily none of his records ever made the best selling singles lists but I imagine his L.P.s sold well.

That record you mention by him sounds like "I Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" which was a HUGE British hit for ANDY WILLIAMS, it was Andy's version of what had been a hit in the U.S. for FRANKI VALLI .. Franki's was the original as far as I'm aware. The song is still very popular here, especially at Karaoke nights, and I've even heard adaptations of it sung at football matches!!

THE RUBETTES "Sugar Baby Love", was a number 1 hit here in 1974, I always thought it owed a lot to FRANKI VALLI as well. They did have a few other hits here but nothing quite as big as that one.

My parents have it [[or have had?) in the "baquelite" [[not vynil) era, jointly with Robert Chantal, Roy Etzel and some Platters and Drifters [[!!!) singles. TEMPUS FUGIT!
I prefer the matt Monro cover than the original by Frakie Valli... perhaps because I have heard much earlier in the crooner voice of Matt. is not because I dislike Frankie voice, I likes a lot various "soulful ones" by him as "Swearing To God". In another thread, some years ago, talking about "incofessable musical tastes of your past" [[:cool:) I remember have said I bought "Sugar baby Love" at 12 - 13 years old.

Hey .. you're correct about MATT MONROE having had some U.K. single hits Copley .. when I looked up his chart record in the "Guinness Book Of British Hit Records" I could find nothing, but I was looking under "Munroe" .. probably shows how much I ever liked his records :)

Manny .. that MATT MONROE version of "Can't Keep My Eyes Off of You" was quite good .. he sounds better singing in Spanish than he does singing in English!!
