Apologies if this has been posted before, but I stumbled across it the other day and thought I'd share it.

It doesn't sound like the original audio track of the footage to me, but I might be wrong!

Cheers

Awesome clip by the way. First time I've ever seen a song clip of them performing. And what was the Hy Lit Show?

Ooops, I forgot to put it in the thread title! Now amended.

IS that Dennis Edwards in the very back?

It sure is!

So it must have been filmed somewhen during 1967 if Dennis is in the group, but it would be good to get an exact date for this clip.

Cheers

I am guessing this performance was around 1966 or early '67.

It was from Philadelphia in the mid 60`s. There are 2 clips on the Four Tops "Definitive" dvd from the show.It is from 1967 but haven`t got the exact date.

Well done Paul for finding this. I had previously only seen a short segment and it was in black and white.

This performance was on "Motown The DVD" .. released by Hipo/Universal etc. in 2009.

According to the booklet notes it was from 1967.

Whenever I see it I suspect that they put Dennis at the back of the others as, being a newcomer to the group, he dadn't quite mastered all of the dance moves. LOL!!

It is indeed on the Motown DVD. How did so many fans here miss it?

Wow! Is Billy Gordon on lead? I thought he left before Dennis came?

I have no idea how I missed this release. Will definitely need to correct that this week.. I also thought that Dennis came to the Contours afters after Joe Stubbs left, which was after Billy Gordon left! This is confusing, and I also wonder what other song the group performed on the show. Does anyone know if they performed their latest release?

besides Dennis Edwards & Sylvester, I don't recognize the other 2.

As it is a lip-synch, Council Gay is acting as the lead, with Sylvester Potts, Dennis Edwards, and Jerry Green lip-synching the background vocals. If I'm mistaken, Mr. Lester may clarify.

Thanks, interesting. Did Dennis always sing lead live and on record? Did he go right from Contours to Tempts? Was he replaced in Contours?

I don't know the answer to your first two questions, but from what I've read Dennis was not replaced in the Contours and when Motown didn't re-sign the group in 1967? they pretty much just disbanded and Dennis was picked to join the Temps. In terms of a time frame I'm not sure what came first, Dennis being picked to joing the Temptations and Motown dropping the group or the group not being re-signed to Motown, Dennis stuck around as a solo-artist and then joining the Temptations. I did read in TCMS that at one point some Motown executives were trying to strong arm Jimmy Ruffin into joining the Contours, but he declined.

Interestingly, none of the guys in that clip are original members of the Contours. Although Sylvester was on the original recording of "Do You Love Me?" and a long-term member of the Contours throughout the years.

Mike, technically they are the same group in name only! 4/5ths of the guys performing in your clip were gone from the group by the time of the appearance on Hy-Lit's show in '67. Only Sylvester Potts appears in both groupings.

Info on the Hy Lit Show anybody ?
When did the TV show start & finish [[month, year) ?
Guess it went out weekly, did it last for 30 minutes or run longer ?
Was Hy the only presenter on the show ?
Was it all soul acts or was some pop stuff also featured ?

I watched HyLit too on a UHF channel out of Philly. I remember seeing Brenda on it doing Youve Made Me So Very Happy. Grew up listening to him on WIBG, GREAT DJ.

Yes I use to listen to Hy Lit [[RIP) on the radio, along with Jerry Blavats, Harvey Holiday, Butterball, Georgie Woods,Mary Mason, etc,etc I believe Hy Lit's son has sort of taken over his legacy.

Yes, yes! There were others. Philly had an abundance of great dj's, radio personalities. So did Detroit and New York.

Incredible. Almost like the Temptations, yet the Supremes were characterized as "being a revolving door of singers" in the seventies! Amazing!

Actually Marv2 .. the BBC "hard talk" interview with Otis Williams of THE TEMPTATIONS counted only 22 bona-fide "Temptations", so in that sense THE CONTOURS have them beat!!

That would be a good one! Make it Motown and non-Motown groups.
