Folks....Happy Tuesday! Tonight, on "Nightflight", I am very pleased to have as my guest Harry Weinger, Universal Music's Vice President of A&R and producer of the new Motown CD set "Earl Van Dyke...the Motown Sound...the Complete Albums and More". Earl Van Dyke and the Funk Brothers were the session musicians for all our favorite Motown stars of the 60's and early 70's...the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, Marvelettes, Vandellas, Brenda Holloway, etc.

If you have any questions about the EVD collection, feel free to post them here.
And just for tonight...no phone calls please...

Join me for some great Motown and chat with Harry tonight Mar 20, 9P-12M ET...at www.womr.org [[http://www.womr.org/)

Thanks! John

Here's a question for HW. I'm of the belief that things are written or added for a reason and in the recording notes it states that the songs Can You Jerk Like Me- track recorded October 16, 1964 and Money [[That's What I Want)-track recorded May 28, 1963 were assigned to the Vandellas. So are there completed versions by Martha and the Vandellas hiding in the vault? And are there lyrics to the song Soul Stomp? As it was assigned to the Contours.

I don't want to take away fro EVD's spotlight, but I just struck a chord with me while reading the booklet... I also wonder why HW didn't include their EVD's sultry live version of Don't Mess With Bill in this collection.

I also love the fact that HW gave us an unedited version of The Flick that clocks in at 12 minutes! He is truly someone who gets the true Motown fan!

If this 2 cd set does well, might we get more of the 'extra stuff'?
Oops! Mr. Weinger just answered this by saying we might see more released digitally.

I believe Harry might be talking about the version of 'I Can't Get Next To You' on disc 2 of the deluxe edition of "Standing In the Shadows Of Motown"
I see you found it, Johnny.

'Let's Talk It Over' was a title previously used for songs by Marv Johnson and Lamont Anthony, but neither has the same writers as the Mary Wells- Marvin Gaye duet that Mr. Weinger mentions

Didn't Frank Wilson move to Detroit in 1966 when the West Coast office closed? So how much was actually recorded in LA after 1966?

HW - were there other live tracks from the March 1966 20 Grand Club engagement for EVD when they opened for the Temptations and Brenda Holloway? Does the live set for Brenda still exist?

I know this is called "You Name It" but it sounds so much like Heart Break from Jr Walker's live album....

Harry and John,

Since we've covered artists like Mary Wells and Brenda Holloway tonight, perhaps Harry can shed some insight as to when or if we'll get any unreleased or alternate Gladys Knight & The Pips material out of the vault. Gladys will be fox trotting her way into American living rooms for the next two months so shouldn't Universal try to capitalize while her media profile is so high?

John,
Did you mean the Jean Terrell Supremes + 4 Tops recording together or did you mean Frank Wilson working with each group individually?

Last question for HW: what did he learn about EVD after this projected was completed that he didn't know before he started it?

It is hard to find a more exciting backing track from the Funks and Supremes than this. Love how John's extended version allows each Supreme a moment to shine....

John, Got to listen to the entire 3 hour broadcast of your show and enjoyed every moment of it. Thanks for asking Harry my question pertaining to how different mixes of a song ended up on different formats of a release [[ie Supremes A Go Go reel to reel tape.) His answer was fascinating. As well, totally dug your remixes of the two Supremes tracks and Spinners "It's A Shame." It really is a shame if SDF followers missed this show. All the best!
