The tentpole reality series falls victim to 'NCIS'

This news is definitely not music to Fox executives’ ears. On Tuesday, the newest instalment of scripted drama NCIS thwacked mega reality competition show American Idol in the ratings.

To be precise, the CBS naval procedural grabbed 18 million viewers to Idol’s 15.6 million in the 8 p.m. ET timeslot, reports TV Line. It was the first time NCIS usurped the Ryan Seacrest-fronted show.

Adding insult to injury, NCIS’s spinoff, NCIS: Los Angeles, was also strong in its 9 p.m. ET timeslot. In all, over the two hours, the two acronymic dramas averaged 16.8 million total viewers compared to Idol’s 15.8 million.

Idol is currently in its 11th season. On Tuesday, the series kicked off its semi-finals round with performances by the 13 male singers.

NCIS is in its ninth season, and Tuesday’s instalment titled “Need to Know” saw a chief petty officer linked to an international arms dealer murdered, and a probationary agent trying to join the team.

But Idol’s lost ratings night doesn’t necessarily mark a swan song for the long-in-the-tooth show. It did win the 18-49 demographic with a 5.0 rating compared to NCIS’s 3.4 rating, down a tenth marking a season low.

Critics have been speculating on Idol’s demise for years now, accented with judge Simon Cowell departing following Season 9 to start up the U.S. version of The X Factor.

Idol debuted in June 2002 to 9.8 million viewers and reached a peak with a Season 5 finale netting 36.4 viewers. However, with changes at the judging table – including the comings and goings of Paula Abdul, Kara DioGuardi, Ellen DeGeneres – ratings haven’t quite maintained that height.

The Season 10 finale took in 29.3 million pairs of eyes, and the Season 11 debut this past January only grabbed 21.9 million.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, NBC’s Parenthood drew 5.1 million total viewers [[its best since Nov. 29) for the Season 3 finale, ABC’s Cougar Town continued to drop to a series low of 4.3 million, and CW’s freshman drama Ringer brought a series low of 1.1 million.
