1968: Cindy moves and looks so much like Florence. Unfortunately, she gets little face time with the camera. There are small bits at 2:30 and 2:50. I feel like I'm looking at Florence.

Claude Francois [[RIP), was a big Motown fan. Check him and his ladies out here. There is another clip of him with Lamont Dozier from the 70's:

By the summer of 1968, Mary and Cindy were always miked WAY down in concert. I remember seeing them three times in two days, in two different cities, during that time. At the first performance I imagined it was a problem with the sound system or an error on the part of the sound people at that particular venue, but when it was the same at all three performances I realized this was How It Was Going to Be from that point on. Reviews of other performances at that time bore this out. In fact I remember one reviewer in Florida saying that Miss Ross could have just "hired two musical owls to hoot in the background" for all you heard of Mary & Cindy, and that she would almost certainly be solo the next time she played that venue. He wasn't far wrong.

No wonder Mary and Cindy took to singing very softly at mic checks. They wanted to be heard at the actual show.

It's interesting to note how different perceptions can be, because I see very little resemblance to Florence in Cindy's appearance and performance. Her moves are much more fluid and her build was quite different. Florence's posture was always ramrod-straight and she was much bigger through the shoulders than Cindy was. Flo was the first to admit she was no dancer and had problems when she subbed for Wanda with the Marvelettes because their act was so heavily dance-oriented and she had difficulty keeping up. Cindy, on the other hand, used her hands and arms a lot more gracefully although of course she lacked Flo's lungs, endearingly sassy persona and huge charisma.

When Cindy was first hired they did their best to put her in "Flo drag," with Florence's trademark asymmetrical Sassoon-styled wig and heavy kohl around the eyes, but to the trained eye there was no big resemblance beyond that and she soon was allowed to develop her own style.

Hit or Miss Diana has never been afraid to try something new and daring. That is why she is Diana Ross.

Then why has she been wearing the same basic hair style for 20 years? Dont get it.

20 years? More like 30 at this point.
