Bobby Debarge flat out nails this song. His tenor was simply awesome, and the note he holds is glass breaking, simply breath taking..........for an R&B group his lead vocals on this particular song were operatic. I may have an idea for a thread after this one.....

This is a classic SDF thread , I'm glad that this is a way to bring it back to the top on the new format.
I am checking out my new Cellar 4 purchase ,which is excellent.
But in addition to that ,because I have been hearing some of the DJ mixes on N.Y. radio on the weekends , I have been revisiting some tracks in the so called "Hip-Hop" genre. I heard some Public Enemy tracks played on KISS-FM here in N.Y. ,and found myself listening to "Don't Believe The Hype" and "911". Damn ,that's some serious shixx. What yall been listening to?
We got to keep this thread going , cause it's a vital part of what we are supposed to be about!!! Post yall!!!!!!

"pop life - prince & the revolution [[the fresh dance mix) of course! "

L.O.L. ,of course!!!! Early today before I read this ,I was playing the long version of "La La La, Hee Hee Hee".

Last week my lady gave me a dub CD of Mayer Hawthorne to listen to and made me promise to not look him up before I listened to it.:) I still haven't looked him up ,but I did listen to the CD.
It's R&B in the same style of Rapheal Saddiq's last CD. Classic R&B content in the songs ,classic late 60's-early 70's structured lyrics , short 3:00 -4:00 length of the songs. The only difference between them was the quality of the instruments and the overall recording quality of the CD. R.S. ,of course had better recording and instrument access , but Hawthorne gets his point across ,and doesn't come off as a rip of R.S. idea of making Classic vintage styled tracks. I've only had one listen ,so I won't say anymore until I've had another listen or two.

Right now at 12:01 ,I'm gonna get into some Otis Redding , playing now is ,"Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Sad Song".

Otis:,"Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa , Your turn".........
Stax Horns: "Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Baa Baa Baaaaaaaa.............

Just to update the post that I mentioned Mayer Hawthorne , I finally did look him up and here is what I found out.
And for the record , I did get the impression that he was "blue eyed soul" ,from his falsetto ,but not in a bad way. I did feel his "Retro" style. Here is a copy of what I discovered on line.. Worth a listen.

"Mayer Hawthorne grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, just outside of Detroit, and vividly remembers, as a child, driving with his father and tuning the car radio in to the rich soul and jazz history the region provided. “Most of the best music ever made came out of Detroit,” claims the singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, who counts Isaac Hayes, Leroy Hutson, Mike Terry, and Barry White among his influences, but draws the most inspiration from the music of Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfield, and the legendary songwriting and production trio of Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland, and Eddie Holland Jr.

The “retro” tag is added to almost any contemporary work that sounds like it was originally recorded between 1966 and 1974, and Hawthorne, among the newest contributors to the genre, is aware of how trends come and go. After being introduced to Stones Throw label head Peanut Butter Wolf by mutual friend Noelle Scaggs of the Rebirth, even his current boss was skeptical. “He showed me two songs and I didn’t understand what I was listening to,” Wolf recalls. “I asked him if they were old songs that he did re-edits of – I couldn’t believe they were new songs and that he played all the instruments.”

And after meeting in person, it was even harder for Wolf to believe that Hawthorne was also the lead vocalist. Few expect such heartfelt sentiment to come from a 29-year-old white kid from Ann Arbor, but he has caught the ear of his family at Stones Throw, as well as BBC Radio 1 host Gilles Peterson and producer/DJ Mark Ronson. Expectations are high for the admitted vinyl junkie who never planned on taking his crooning public. Hawthorne’s hanging-by-a-string falsetto and breakbeat production on his first recorded effort, the tender “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out,” are simultaneously Smokey and J Dilla – equal parts “The Tracks of My Tears” and “Fall in Love.” “It’s soul,” he explains, “But it’s new.”

Hawthorne has produced and played instruments for much of his life, but never intended to become a singer. He isn’t formally trained, and never sang in the church choir or in any of the bands he was in before founding the County [[formerly the County Commissioners). But here he is, new school soul sensation, who has taken the Motown assembly-line production model and eliminated nearly every element but himself and a few hired hands. “I think Mayer is the only artist in the history of the label that I’ve signed after hearing only two songs,” says Peanut Butter Wolf. “Sometimes, you just know it’s the right thing to do.”

And for those willing to believe anything is possible, be grateful to have Mayer Hawthorne on the scene. It’s not just throwback music anymore – this revival is all about progression.

I heard an amazing thing today on N.Y. Kiss F.M. They have these club mixes on the weekend and sombody was mixing Marvins LGIO vocal with one of 50 cents instrumental beats. Although up to this point ,I normally shun such things but I got to admit ,it fit very well. He was also using the inst track of Cee-Lo's F-You ,which surprised the hell out of me ,with some Stevie and Temps Accapella's from the Kareoke series of CD's. I was shocked at the way they fit perfectly together. Cee-Lo's inst track is very retro. I've got to research this a little more.

Reasons - Live - Earth Wind & Fire , Now that's how you "tweek" and one up on yourself. No one can out-do the original version better than the original group themselves . One of EWF's shining moments. With the "Live" version of this song , everyone else just might as well just leave it alone. Done ,finis ,perfection!!!!!!

I have got into Marvins ,"Walking In The Rain" and the Vulnerable tracks from the old "Marvin Gaye Collection" box with the alternate vocals. Awesome.......

Steady on Adrian, you don't want to sicken yourself of it.

It's funny how a non-album "Lost & Found" by Marvin Gaye, turns out to be one of his most satisfying albums, to these ears at least.

I've been playing Adele's new album 21 a lot since I bought it earlier this week. That, and Helplessness Blues, by Fleet Foxes, an indie band whose sound is highly influenced by 60's folk rock groups like Simon and Garfunkel.

Phillip Mitchell [[later Prince Phillip Mitchell) even his demos are great, just like Sam Dees and George Jackson.

Saw him in 1971, with Al Green, Ann Peebles, Rufus Thomas..he was awesome.........and his dancing athleticism was absolutely matched to Prince....splits etc.

I recall the completely unknown Bloodstone opened as a favour to get exposure;
"Bloodstone had a long and storied career as a five-piece Soul outfit. They originally started as a Doo Wop group in High School in Kansas City. They then went on the road, landing in Las Vegas before going to LA. There they learned how to play instruments and became an actual band. That wasn’t the end of their journey however. Still not finding any interest by record companies, in 1971 they moved to London where they finally got a record deal and found success. The band shows off their Soul roots with the opening power ballad Outside Woman that sounds a bit like the Chi-Lites. Then there’s the more upbeat What Did You Do To Me? Part 1. Part 2 of the song is a slow grooving, let’s get down and dirty follow up. There’s also the funky Everybody Needs Love that starts off with a drum break. Bloodstone is much better at sticking to their lush Sweet Soul sound however on tracks like Keep Your Own Thing Together and Unreal."
