The Motown Sound was magical to us in the UK in the 60s. The sound could not be emulated, and we were exposed to dreadful ripoffs, whilst the original artists got very little exposure. Made you weep to see such listless, dire, torpid renditions. Still does. I'm sure that's why we feel such loyalty to the original artists when we saw such miserable plagiarism. See if you can bear these.....
cheers Mike

I'm not sure whether to thank you or not for those Mike .. :)

Actually I quite enjoyed the versions of "This Old Heart Of Mine" and "Head To Toe", though they pale in comparison to the versions by THE ISLEY BROTHERS/TAMMI TERRELL/THE MIRACLES/CHRIS CLARK etc.

I didn't think the "male" version of "You Beat Me To The Punch" worked at all .. especially when they changed the lyrics in the part that should go "I found one day boy, you were a playboy" to "I found you were a plaything" or something similar.

You could have added this one from THE FOURMOST too ..

Incidentally .. looking in my Rare RecordsGuide it looks like original 7" copies of these versions of "Head To Toe" and "You Beat Me to the Punch" are worth a pretty penny now.

It's almost worth watching to see the drummers trying not to play. I enjoyed the dancing French girls especially, and am ready for more of that, but I must say it was mightily nostalgic to hear those songs played that way. Every semi-pro band in the UK was playing Motown and Stax numbers. They may not have been the originals, but they loved those songs and did their best to play them - and the audiences couldn't get enough.

Not forgetting the Amen Corner rip off of the rif from Smokey's "More More More Of Your Love".

Neither of them Tony. I can't think of any Brit girl that did?

Have found one.

Mmm, can't say that I hear what you hear. Anyway it wasn't Amen Corners song - they covered the US hit by the Lemon Pipers.

Did THE LEMON PIPERS really record "Bend Me, Shape Me"? The U.S. hit version was by THE AMERICAN BREED ..

Well .. I certainly remember the AMEN CORNER version of the song [[being British) but hadn't heard it in at least 30 years .. having checked the youtube link the similarity with "More, More, More Of Your Love" is quite obvious .. :)

Put it down to old age but I read 'More Love' instead of 'More More More Of Your Love' - duh! Yes I sure can hear the similarity now.
