I'm curious...a question for our European friends. In the 60s and 70s, were EPs purchased much more so than albums? It's strange they never caught on here in the US. I wonder what the prices were, if that's part of the reason. I wonder, comparatively, how much singles, EPs and albums cost in Europe. Here in the 70s, a 45 single might be about $1.50 as I recall, and a full length album about $6. I never even knew EPs had existed in the US at all as they only were marketed a few short years in the early 60s.

Any idea why the EP format was more prevalent in Europe? Was it possibly price?

There are some great photos on those EP covers - very attractive. The Four Tops one for "Something About You" looks akin to the photo on the Four Tops Now LP so seems to precede that album by a few years?

Thanks jsmith. So it looks like EPs were really a pretty good buy then...in your experience did folks buy them more often than the full length LPs? I have no idea what EPs sold for here in the US, but based on your recollection of the pricing, I would have probably sooner invested in an EP rather than an LP.

Kenneth, here in France EP's and 45's were VERY popular in the 60's, and the album format was not that common.

That's why the teenagers bought all these little records to play them during parties, etc...

In my limited experience I think they were used in juke boxes and gave the listener a choice between a single play selection [regular 45 rpm] and two to three songs per side. I later acquired a Choker Campbell EP that is more like a reference book that never gets played [stuff].

Those Dutch ones have great covers but the vast majority of them are ordinary 45's rather than EP's.
In many European countries [[though not usually in the UK), singles came in picture sleeves as standard.
With regard to Motown EP's in the UK, they were generally available to buy from any British record shop but unlike LP's & 45's they were not everyday stock out on display in the stores' record racks.
The odd record shop would have a special rack [[next to the LP racks) where a few EP's would be displayed but many shops didn't have them out on display. As [[in general) we Motown / soul record buyers were young teenagers, we weren't usually fully up to speed with everything that was available to buy. So many fans who would have bought copies of these EP's didn't because we were unaware that many of them had been released.

Those are beautiful. I especially love the Darnells' "Too Hurt to Cry." That cover is classic romance comic book vintage. I can't imagine how rare that one must be!
