Howdy Folks! Tonight, on "Nightflight", Part TWO of a tribute to Motown's Marvelous MARVELETTES, with what I believe is the WORLD PREMIERE airing of the Brand New Universal/Hip-O release "The Marvelettes-
Forever More-The Complete Motown Albums Volume Two"! And if THAT isn't enough for you, how about if I invite the producer of the "Complete Motown Albums", Harry Weinger, to "Nightflight"? Well...I DID! And
Harry was very generous to agree to join us on the air! Thanks Harry!

Those of us who have been lucky enough to have obtained the compilation know what an amazing set it is. And those of you who will hear it for the first time on "Nightflight" ...well, you're in for a TREAT!

A couple of things to note...I will be posting a sister thread to this for you to post any questions you may have for Harry about the new release...so that Harry can check them out before the show, so do post your questions there...not here. Thanks! And, I request politely that there be no phone calls during the time that Harry is on the air...I'll be on the phone with him and won't be able to answer your
calls.
But please use this thread for chat and requests, as it may be hard to get to all of the Marvelettes 2, and I really want to play what you'd like.
Phewww!
So join me...and Harry Weinger and The Marvelettes Tuesday evening for some great MOTOWN and great talk....on "Nightflight"....on WOMR 92.1 FM Provincetown and WFMR 91.3 FM Orleans and streaming live worldwide at www.womr.org [[http://www.womr.org)

Thanks!
John

Hey John, looking forward to what I know will be a fabulous show tonight. "The Marvelettes Forever More" says it all! Plus an interview with the always sightful Mr. Weinger, fantastic! If you're taking requests how about "Keep Off, No Trespassing" - "Pink" mono version of course - and/or "Our Lips Just Seem To Rhyme Everytime" from "Return of". It's really wonderful having these albums again, and for the first time in digital splendor. See you on the radio!

I think The Return of the Marvelettes would have been very marketable as a solo album, with say a title like "The Marvelous Wanda Rogers!". That may have been enough name recognition.

kenneth
12-13-2011, 10:33 PM
Could we also hear the Mono version of "The Stranger"? That's one of the rare themes for Motown...about a one night stand. You just know Berry Gordy wouldn't have let Diane Ross sing that one.

soulballad
12-13-2011, 10:35 PM
"I Know Better" in mono is superior to the stereo version. You can really hear the strings clearly.

kenneth

I don't have my copy yet.. boo hoo. Is 'I Can't Wait Til Summer Comes' the same song that Mary Wilson lists in Dreamgirl ? Did Jean Terrell record vocals to the track?

The Lewis Sisters! Great comment, John. On a scale of 1 to 100 regarding singing ability, the Lewis Sisters are a 1.

Wow, I forgot or didn't realize that Valerie's "Exposed" album actually predate's Marvin's "What's Going On" since they were released about the same time. But indeed the "Exposed" album does list the musicians, technically making it the first Motown to do so. Interesting.

I have a last minute question for Harry, Midnight Johnny. If you can...please ask him about the 2 CD Marvelettes Anthology. In 2009, when Universal launched the Motown 50 website, it listed a 2 CD Marvelettes Anthology in the release schedule. With Vol. 2, we now have everything there is to have...but I'm just curious what happened to this release?? Thanks!

sophisticated_soul
12-13-2011, 11:28 PM
I like "Three Months", I loved the doo wop influence in early Motown recordings.

carole cucumber
12-13-2011, 11:30 PM
Carlo,
I believe the 2 CD Anthology was proposed as a release for the U.K.; the albums collection- a U.S. release.
Around that time, there seemed to have been a shift in the direction the U.K. arm- then led by Darryl Easley - was taking.
Perhaps Harry will elaborate further.

Thank you Carole! Interesting. Yes, I would like to know more about this...

How awesome is it that these albums are finally on CD??! I remember when I was in first year of University and I would spend hours studying in the library, while listening to my mp3 recordings from my vinyl copies of The Marvelettes' Pink Album and Sophisticated Soul, back-to-back...with all of the pops and clicks! :) Good times!

So many of these early unreleased tracks are much better than a lot of the cuts that were included on the Marvelettes' early albums. What gives?? Someone was asleep at quality control...Many of these tracks are in stereo.... Mr. Weinger said that all the Lost & Found tracks were newly mixed- maybe that's why they sound so much better than many of the mono songs on the early albums.

12-14-2011, 12:51 AM

carlo
12-14-2011, 12:51 AM
Yes, you're right, Carole. Although I meant that the material/songs themselves [[the previously unreleased ones) sound superior to some of the released cuts that were originally included on the early albums, IMO. I like these songs better. I think Midnight Johnny also raised the same point. These songs could have been released.
