Okay, We're big Motown fans! So, in the rules of Motown 'Friendly Competition', place in order which girl group you like the best. Be as honest as possible, listen to some of the groups songs again if you have to! But it's all in fun! The choices are of course: The Marvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas, The Supremes, and the Vevelettes. After much listening over the past month my order is:
1. Martha and the Vandellas
2. The Marvelettes
3. The Supremes
4. The Velvelettes

RossHolloway, if you think it's so pointless discussing music why are you on this board in the first place? This thread is no more pointless than other threads on this forum.
My list:
The Supremes
Martha & The Vandellas
The Marvelettes
The Lollipops
The Velvelettes

As a kid listening to Motown, I used to do this sort of thing all the time and quite often the order would change depending on how I liked whatever hit might be on the charts at the time. I also included other non-Motown groups in my survey, but it was rare for any other group to ever take a spot away from these four.
So now that all their careers are over and I would have to rank them on the basis of their entire body of work, I think I would have to go with an order that seems popular with others as well:
Martha and the Vandellas
The Marvelettes
The Supremes [[in their various forms)
The Velvelettes
1. Marvelettes
2. Martha & Vandellas
3. Velvelettes
4. Supremes

All of the four groups named have been my favorite Motown group at one time or another depending on what the current release was.
After taking live performances into account my order is:-
First: Velvelettes
Joint Second: Marvelettes/ Martha & Vandellas
Fourth: Supremes
I don't know if I was just unlucky, but every time I saw the Supremes live, they gave what I considered a substandard performance. Yet solo concerts I've seen by both Diana Ross and by Mary Wilson have been excellent.

Blackberries were a real working group?Jackie, Louvain & Marlene were the original studio group of Andantes but after 1964 it seems like there were other women who came in under the umbrella name of Andantes.Everyone should know that working LIVE on-stage is alot more difficult then being a studio singer.

I always thought that Jackie, Marlene and Louvain WERE the Andantes, but other singers such as Pat Lewis, Diane Lewis, Telma Hopkins etc often worked alongside them or substituted for any who was unable to make a session.
The Blackberries were Clydie, Sherlie and Venetta, but again they sometimes worked alongside or were substituted when one of the girls was unavailable by singers such as Patrice Holloway or Merry Clayton.
The Blackberries [[Sherlie, Venetta and Clydie) were still together as a group for Diana's 'Touch me in the morning' album and Jean Terrell's A&M album. Also they were still together with Billie Barnum taking Sherlie's place working with Humble Pie later on.

Is that Sherlie Mathews, Venetta Fields & Clydie King...right.Well I know Venetta as an Ikette & ofcourse Clydie was a Raelette, Ikette & all round the LA studio scene. Ann Bogan also sang as a Andante. Just remember NOBODY would have been signed to Motown Detroit 60's that didn't have natural class & could really sing whether lead or background.
