The rare pictures are worth the price alone. The sound is perfection and for those of you who really love the REAL group you are in for a treat! Thanks to all involved

I thought I had passed into heaven but I soon snapped out of it. LOL!

The mono pink album is superior to the stereo. Wanda, Katherine and Gladys together have a great soul girl group sound. Take a listen to "Just One More Kiss" or "So Glad It's Summer Time" to name a few. Ann Bogan's "Breakthrough" and Wanda's "Change Of Heart" could have taken the group to a new level in the late 60's. I am 200% satisfied with this release. My only question for Harry and co is where is the mid to late 60's live recordings by the Marvelettes? As proven on this release their sound while maybe wasn't as smooth or slick as the Andantes but it wasn't as rough around the edges as some would have you believe. Especially the group after they were a trio. Great stuff!

So how are you people getting this when the release date is still four days away?????????? And is Amazon UK still showing it as unavailable for order? I was supposed to get a notice when it could be ordered again.

Guys, try and post some reviews on Amazon.

Slightly off topic, but the reason I never bought the first volume of the Supremes sets [["This is the Story") is that the Amazon reviews on the unreleased tracks were rather ho-hum [[plus there were only 13 of them in all). Posting the raves here is nice but in a way we are preaching to the choir.

Let's help Hip-O sell out this title. I will do so as soon as I get mine.

I second Kenneth's suggestion. I think we should try to go public with our appreciation for Motown product a lot more than we usually do. I'll post a Marvelettes review as soon as I've received and [[inevitably) enjoyed it!

My copy arrived today. I've been anticipating this release for awhile now and I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT. I was quite giddy when I picked mine up from the mailbox. Only listened to disc 1 so far. For those still waiting, you will not be disappointed at all. For those who hasn't or isn't ordering a copy, you are missing out. Thanks to the Gang for putting this wonderful package together. I know...I try to support Hip-O for all they do but a difference of $20 or more is just too much, especially once you add in tax and shipping which is free on Amazon [[at least for the moment) and some other sites.

Ann Bogan's "Breakthrough" is kinda erie considering how she bascially has disappeared. She lives in Ohio now but she will not be bothered with anything Motown. The song is about breaking away from a bad relationship but at towards the end of the song Ann sings "I'll go to a far away place, someplace where you can't reach me".

Per the notes in the booklet both of the Ann lead songs were originally intended for Glady's Knight & The Pips. I love her take on " I Dont Want To Do Wrong" in which she nails it, but I would also have love to hear her on Glady's "Take Me In your Arms and Love Me"

Paulo - I only saw it for that low of a price on Amazon UK and then they took it off the availability. It still shows unavailable with no pre-price guarantee on the UK Amazon site. I was able to get one at the low price on Amazon UK, and one for about $55 on Amazon US. I usually buy two copies of the Hip-O sets when it's my favorite artists anyway.

As much as I love and respect the gentlemen who work so hard to put these releases together for us [[Harry, Andy and George), I do agree that the business/logistical side of Hip-O Select seems to be somewhat of a mess. Perhaps that's because these limited edition releases are not much of a priority to Universal? I understand your point and I agree with you Paulo. Most of us here have been ever so loyal by supporting these releases one after the other...and at the very least, we should be able to purchase the product DIRECTLY from Hip-O Select's website. So many of us have been more than patient, waiting for these releases to come out and then when they finally do, many of us are unable to purchase them right away. Many of the fans in the UK have to wait months later to buy. That's usually the case for me as well. There's no reason why Hip-O Select should be charging $25 to ship a single CD to a neighbouring country. I've shipped dozens and dozens of items over the years to the States and usually pay around $5, not $25. There's also no reason why they should not be able to ship to the UK. I don't understand it. They were able to accommodate the international fans years ago, so I'm guessing some employees were laid off and they can no longer offer the same level of service that they once offered? I get the fact that they have a budget to work with, but so do other limited edition labels, such as Rhino Handmade, etc.

There's also no reason why they should not be able to ship to the UK. I don't understand it. They were able to accommodate the international fans years agoI can't really shed any light on your question, but there could be a tax liability [VAT] for selling in the EU when UME has operating units in the EU. This is called nexus. Hip-0 has enough problems not being able to properly calculate and charge sales tax to US customers. Taking on additional liability for foreign sales with differing VAT rates in each country could be more trouble to them than it's worth.

carlo
12-14-2011, 01:33 AM
I guess that could be part of the reason. But I just found it odd, because they did ship to international countries in the past...years ago. I know that they did switch their service to a different company, so I guess that has something to do with it. It used to be SureSource who shipped out the products and took care of customer service. Now I believe it's a different company.

VAT itself would not be of any concern to Hip-O. As long as Hip-O ship at the correct postal rate to the EU country concerned, the onus is on the 'importer' to pay any import duty liable, and then VAT at the appropriate rate for the country concerned. As far as the UK is presently concerned, personal imports into the UK up to the value of GBP17.99 can be imported free of duty and VAT. However, this 'concession' is being withdrawn during 2012.

Any item imported into the UK of GBP18 and over, is subject to the appropriate of import duty [[currently CD's do not attract any such duty); VAT at 20% is then applied to the combined value of the item plus shipping, plus duty at the appropriate rate [[where applicable)
Added to that, Royal Mail then charge the rip-off rate of GBP8 [[yes $12 or thereabouts) for collecting the amount of duty/VAT payable off the addressee and submitting that to HM Revenue and Customs. From mid-2012 this will also apply to most items UNDER GBP17.99 as well, making the cost of privately purchasing CD's not available through retailers in the UK horribly expensive. I can certainly see my CD purchasing habits changing dramatically !!

Lucky you. Hopefully your's arrived in better condition than mine did. I came home, excited to see it waiting for me in my mail box. I opened it and discovered a huge dent on the front cover and the spine was all dented too. I noticed the envelope that it came in was slightly torn, so it was damaged during shipping. I only got an opportunity to admire the beautiful packaging very briefly before I went to the post office to return it. :[[ Good things come to those who wait.

This is my second package damaged this month. I also had to return The Supremes Playlist Plus a couple of weeks ago. Still haven't received my new copy. :[[

First of all Paulo, I didn't know you had cancer and not long to live. I'm sorry to hear about your rapidly declining health. Now I understand why you said not receiving the Box set in time would ruin your Christmas. However, without this knowledge, I could only conclude you were being over the top and melodramatic in your earlier post. Now it makes sense. I hope you live long enough to receive and enjoy your box set in time before you die. Maybe someone on this board who's a friend of yours and has the boxset might be willing to send you their set so you can enjoy it on Christmas.

I'm surprised to see that a lot of the tracks from the "In Full Bloom" album were recorded pre-1969.

I really like the colour photo of Katherine, Ann and Wanda in the booklet from the In Full Bloom photo session [[the one where they are wearing street clothes). Very 60's! :)

They were so beautiful...especially Gladys. The one photo in the booklet of the ladies wearing the green gowns is stunning. Gladys has her hand up in the air. Give the lady a tiara! Stunning! :)

The paper quality of the booklet is much better for this set. I'm happy to see that. It has more of a glossy finish to it, whereas the first volume's booklet was more like plain paper.

I also never realized that the individual shots featured on the cover of the Pink album actually comes from a group photo, which was cropped to individual photographs.

I didn't know "This Night Was Made For Love" is actually called "Tonight Is Made For Love".

So does anyone really know who these mystery ladies are that are featured on the cover of "The Return Of"? I could have sworn someone here once revealed who they were, but maybe I'm just imagining things. You can slightly see one of their faces on the back cover.

Maybe it was another thread where it came up, but I read in the notes to "Marvelettes Deliver the Singles," that Smokey said he didn't know who the two other girls were. He always seems to put things in the best possible light for Motown, so I wouldn't necessarily take his word for it. I'd love to know where the photo was taken. According to "Forever's" notes, the album was recorded in Detroit, so it would seem the photo was taken somewhere in the area.

The buzz in "Someday We'll Be Together" is on the original master as evidenced on the vinyl LP. It isn't something that develops over time. It was likely electrical interference while originally recording or mixing that song. I'm guessing the hum is from the electric guitar. The noise seems to be doubled [[in stereo) by the guitar's tape-delayed echo effect.

That kind of thing would be hard to pick up on listening to the original vinyl; I imagine it's more obvious on the transfer to digital.

I'm amazed at some of the transfers on this set. Really beautifully done and the Mono mixes especially really pop.

Yeah, I can see how it's hard to hear that hum on the vinyl record. CDs made from the original tapes are generally easier to listen to more closely and more intently without the distracting pops, clicks and surface noise of the vinyl versions.

I'm surprised that no one has noticed that on the wonderful disc #4 that tracks 6 & 16 have been transposed! 6 is 'Just One More Kiss [[Before You Leave)' & 16 is 'One Kiss Led To Another'!

Bob come lately, here! The package finally arrived yesterday from Deep Discount.

Mix is everything. Listening to the bonus track I'm Gonna Hold On Long As I Can from the UK album makes the US version seem pale. If I can say it like our cousins, this is a stomper . I would have been more into the song back when it was released if this had been the mix.

The one small disappointment with the set is the bonus track [I]The Hunter Gets Captured By the Game not having the extra verse with the real end of no fade. The hope was for a remix to capture the two parts of the song.

Finally, real difficulty has been experienced scanning the covers of Forever and Forever More due to the "metallic" nature of the covers. The scanner light reflects off the metallic surface producing a dull image. Does anyone have any techniques for capturing the metallic surface in a scan?

Agree with both of these observations. Miss the original ending of Hunter without the sudden fade. Had made a query earlier to see if this might be "corrected" in the package but guess it was not.

Love Hold On Long As I Can much more in the UK mix as well...never heard that but knew it existed. Definitely adds a lot to that song, yes a real stomper.

I'm loving the set in spite of the little flaw on Hunter so am not complaining!

Yep. The first run of the limited edition pressing has this track switch. The master has been revised and the second run - as well as the digital masters up at iTunes and elsewhere - will have the corrected master. Folks who bought the first run, it's a collector's item times two.

I've just picked up on the mistake while I was listening to Disc Four [[and made the mistake of starting a new thread about it). With the similarity between the two song titles, it's an understandable mistake.

Forever More: The Complete Motown Albums, Vol. 2 CD
Marvelettes
Our Price: $71.98
When the Marvelettes' "Please Mr. Postman" climbed to the top of the pop charts in 1961, it was not only a hit record, it was the crossover hit an ambitious and feisty little independent label out of Detroit, Motown Records, needed. The rest ... Full Descriptionis history -- Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, the Supremes, the Four Tops, Smokey Robinson -- the Motown catalog is an endless treasure, and not the least of these is the wonderful recording legacy of the Marvelettes. Somehow the public wasn't drawn to this fine singing trio quite as much as it was to the Supremes, but the quality and consistency of the Marvelettes' work at Motown proves that they were way more than just an opening act for the Diana Ross caravan. This four-CD set, the second multi-disc set in a series documenting the Marvelettes history at Motown [[the first, 2009's Forever: The Complete Motown Albums, Vol. 1, covered 1961 to 1965 and collected the group's first six albums, plus singles, B-sides and rarities), compiles the group's final four albums [[1967's The Marvelettes, 1968's Sophisticated Soul, 1969's In Full Bloom, and 1970's The Return of the Marvelettes), along with non-LP singles, B-sides, and other rarities from the same time period, and documents the last chapter in this fine singing group's Motown legacy -- a legacy that stands with any at the label. Without the Marvelettes, who knows what the history of Motown Records would have been like? Luckily, we don't have to worry about it. Here's why. ~ Steve Leggett

Forever More was on iTunes for a day or two. I remember seeing it on there on the release date and last week, it seemed to have disappeared. Although you couldn't purchase the individual tracks. You had to purchase the entire set of mp3's for approximately $40.

Has anyone noticed any problems with their fourth disc from about track 20 onward? It's skipping, I can't copy it to my iPod properly, on multiple drives / players.

I wonder if I just have a defective copy, or if it's a mastering issue?Mine didn't skip, but it did take an extra long time to rip the fourth disc onto my computer compared to how long it usually takes.

I've only had the CDs for a week now and I'm surprised how fast I'm already singing along to everything! I love that they included every song and didn't leave any songs off. I also noticed that the online pictures look like the cover artwork is supposed to be gray, but it's actually green. I like how they matched it with Gladys' green top in one of the inside panel photos.

Finally I would like to ask something, I have received my copy and now I have selected 103 songs for the car. I notice that two songs are different, they were "Twistin Postman" and "Strange I know", there are other versions on the "Compact Command Performances" CD with a little bit more vocals. Why are these versions not included in other CD compilations of The Marvelettes?

On the fourth CD one of my favorites of the early stuff is "From now on" the song is sophisticated.

I´m very happy to have now the complete Marvelettes story :)

Honest Man, when the set first went on to Amazon uk it was really expensive around £70, they gave release date of 13/12/11, but since then the price has dropped to £21, but site is saying they will let you know when set becomes available, no release date on HMV UK either and the price is around £40.
I am sure I read somewhere that the UK release date is 30/01/12

hope this is a help

All I can say is WOW. I've been listening to this collection for the past two weeks on my computer at work. There's just so much to try and wrap my head around. This is my first time hearing the groups last two albums, In Full Bloom and Return of the Marvelettes. I absolutely love Wanda's vocals on That's How Heartaches Are Made. And how in the heck did the track Too Many Tears, Too Many Times get overlooked for release for a single in 1965/66? It's great to finally hear them both, but I can't help but wondering about what all was going on in the group during these final years. Am I also correct in seeing that Gladys Horton did not sing lead on any song after September 1966, a full year before she left the group? I found that rather strange...

I also thought some of their unreleased songs to be quite remarkable; Songs like Queen of Fools, Johnny Do Right, Learning to Forget You, You've Lost the Sweetest Boy and perhaps my favorite, Just One More Kiss [[Before You Leave Me).

For those who haven't picked up this release yet, you won't be sorry if you do get this. The lay out, booklet and packaging are all just beautiful. Another fantastic job by Harry and Company! Keep up the great work.

I agree that it does, especially, on the "now I have someone..." surge in the high notes is very evocative of "now what becomes of..." in "Brokenhearted." But I had never noticed it before.

I assume you mean disc 4.

I really rate the track Breakthrough [[I've Got My Freedom). An absolute gem of a gem, I play it continuously and I am hoping MJ does one of his extended versions in the future. My other special favourites are Johnny Do Right, Dance A While, You Can Bet Your Bottom Dollar. I would say that most of the unissued are of similar quality to what was released. Having said that, I can't get into Wanda's version of "You Lost The Sweetest Boy".

I have tried, really I have tried hard but it doesn't hit the spot for me. I'll try again with more "open" ears! However, for me, there's a certain charm about the Mary Wells' version and I think Diana's strong backing vocals take the chorus to a higher level.

Mary Wells recorded the track first, before the Velvelettes who dubbed on their French vocals. There's a reference to the Velvelettes French vocals in an internal Hitsville newsletter that is partially reproduced in Al Abrahms fantastic book.

John,

I'm glad you mention that. As good as "Hype & Soul" is, I find one thing terribly disappointing- the visually interesting but impractical placement of press releases and newspaper article.
Several reproduced newspaper artices say continued on page xx... and then no page xx is to be found anywhere in the book. One reads part of a story and then is left hanging. One might say that one can guess what was written next.. but the point is that one does not historically know what Was written... wasn't that one of the points of this book- to present the real thing? Some press releases are covered over by other press releases and/or memorabilia/photos/newspaper clippings. In some cases, one can fill in some of the blanks; but in others, it is extremely difficult to guess what the covered parts of phrases are. It lessens the full historicity of these releases and defeats part of the purpose of this work.
Why include only part, when one should have been given the whole? As the volume is only sold through the authors and Amazon, one did not have the opportunity to browse through the book to note its 'partial' makeup before buying, as one could do in a brick and mortar store.
Perhaps those responsible for this otherwise great work, might remedy the situation by posting on the Hype and Soul website the missing pieces in a file only accessable to those who have purchased the book. I'm sure there are records of those who have purchased the volume. A key[[code number) might be sent to them, giving them access to view the missing pieces and in a sense to complete the story that Mr. Abrams so skillfully tells.

...and yeah, on the 2nd page there would have been pictures of the Velvelettes with Robert Gordy and Pierre Berjot.....and....and.....

But hey stop!!!!! Who keeps work memos from over 50 years ago. In fact, who keeps ANYTHING from work after moving on to a new job!

Nowadays, I am grateful for small mercies and I gladly accept any piece of information whether it be big or small. I also know that it's gonna have to be that way for a long time. I guess you could say that I've come to terms with my collecting mania.

If Al puts out a second book, I will gladly buy copies.

I too love the Mary Well's version but there were always a couple lines in the song that I could never understand until I heard the Marvelettes version. Wanda really does this song justice the way she sings the song.

My copy finally arrived. I'm enjoying it immensely.
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the 4 photos of Kat, Wanda & Ann on pg. 34. As soon as I saw them, I wondered if someone/the photographer/Motown was trying to channel the Supremes A Go-Go album cover and photoshoot.
I also found it interesting that 'Too Many Tears, Too Many Times" had the working title S.O.S. I immediately thought of Marv Johnson's S.O.S [[Girl In Distress) and the unreleased Martha and the Vandellas version which likely has lyrics that fit the part of the title in parenthesis. Both songs, though different have William Stevenson's name listed first in the composer credits. But the Marv Johnson S.O.S. was recorded earlier; hence the 2nd possible use of the title seems odd. The mystery deepens.
Is that Kat singing the opening lines of "You Better Cool It"?

Well picked up on You Better Cool It.

I would GUESS at Georgy rather than Kat. One for the Marvelettes' masterminds, methinks. Let me ask around. Meanwhile, Randy or Tony might know.

Does anyone know if Gladys ever attempted some of the songs that Wanda was the lead on? Songs like Don't Mess With Bill, Danger Heartbreak Dead Ahead or I'll Keep On Holding On? Or better yet, after Glady left the group in 1967, did Ann ever sing lead during their live concerts or does anyone recall hearing Wanda sing some of their earlier hits live in concert like Please Me Postman or Too Many Fish in The Sea?

Isn't it a shame that no unknown HDH tracks have been discovered in the vaults?

theboyfromxtown
02-29-2012, 05:54 PM
Maybe the Marvelettes turned down their songs and then when HDH started to churn them out, HDH had too much on their plate. The Temptations had very little HDH too.

Do I detect that taste of disc 4 has made you wanting more?

Yes, I'm a regular Oliver Twist.

I loved "Finders Keepers" and "Knock On My Door". I was hoping that "A Bad Case of Love" existed.

Got mine yesterday..ordered from U.K. Amazon back in November..I like the songs on disc 4 from 1964 onward..the early
songs are hard to get into some have good melodies I will have to play them more..My standouts would be "Learning to
forget you" , "Just one more kiss[[before you leave me)..

"A bad case of love " exists but there are no vocals to it..

Now that's a shame.

I'm rather pleased you mentioned "Learning To Forget You". That track was specifically named by Gladys in an old UK publication. It was the one Gladys most remembered and wished it had been released.

Was "Caught You Putting The Game On Love" never mixed to stereo? It is mono here as it was on the Essential Collection?- [[although the sound on Forever More blows the older version out of the water).

Boy, I saw it on a list of supposedly unreleased tracks. I`ve been collecting Motown since 1967 lps only. Since the advent of cds only albums that I don`t think will be released on cd.I`ve just ordered "Shades Of Gospel Soul" which I will convert to cd. I also collect dvds Shindig etc and celebrity tv shows.

"A bad case of love " exists but there are no vocals to it..

I was rather afraid that might be the case. The band track "I've Been Loving You" was also assigned to the Marvelettes, but that ended up being used for Frances Nero's "Keep On Loving Me".

"You Better Cool It" sounds like Kat Georgeanna & Wanda on the opening to me.

That would be my first guess too but I suspect Gladys might be there as well only because we know it was common practice for the lead singer to also sing background.

Just One More Kiss [[Before You Leave Me) is definitely one of the stand out tracks on disc 4, don't know how it ever got overlooked for a release either for an album cut or even a 45 release, really great song.

"My Baby Won't Come Back" seems to have been recorded on the same day as Martha's version. Is that right?

Annotation lists that once the track for "I Can't Wait Till Summer Comes" was completed, it was first assigned to the Vandellas. The progression that follows is interesting: background vocals and demo lead by Johnny Bristol, horns, re-assignment to the Marvelettes and lead vocal, and lastly, strings.
In 'Dreamgirl: My Life As A Supreme''s itinerary, Mary Wilson lists the song as being worked on twice by the new Supremes. The first mention places its recording on the same day as "Bill, When Are You Coming Home". As Johnny Bristol is the producer and one of writers of both songs, and recalling the story of "Life Beats" [Johnny Bristol, producer] consideration for the new Supremes' first single, it would seem likely that there is a Jean Terrell led version in the vaults. Can Harry, Andrew, or George substantiate whether or not this is a true assumption?

This is coming from a die hard Supremes fan! RUN do not WALK to your computer and order this set! Hippo/Motown whomever this is one of the best things I have ever gotten. First of all when I heard Smokey yell "Take 22" on You Bet your Bottom Dollar I thought my god how hard are these women working? The Train Thats bringing My Baby has remnants of How Long Has that Evening Train Been Gone the way the background is arranged. I just got this set today in the mail and I have to tell you its packaged beautifully PLEASE dont download it Im telling you! One of the pleasures is seeing pics of the Marvelettes we have never seen and for those die hard Motown fans there is one photo sesion that looks like it could have been copied from the Supremes a Go Go...you will notice it when you see the book. There is not a dud on here and I wish the information booklet could have been bigger because it is so good. I dont know what to say I am glad I didnt wait on this one! Beats any Diana Ross CD [[whom I love) that I could have gotten. I didnt think I would like this better than Surrender! I guess its because I have Surrender on an album so I knew what to expect. The swirling strings on My Baby Must be a Magician are so audible and although I am not a fan of Mono more Stereo I like all of the mono cuts even on Magician which I didnt think I would. Its so criminal to hear some of these tracks because they show a side of Gladys that proves she can handle material that is ahead of its time. One Kiss Led to Another and So Glad its Summertime sound like they could have been made in the late sixties! Wanda and Gladys are WELL represented here and I am sure Kat is proud of this collection. You can hear all of their voices and Ann Bogan has some lead cuts on here that blow Im Gonna Hold on As Long as I Can out of the water. What is awesome is the UK version of Hold on is 10 times better than the American one this version should have been the single for the US you can understand what she is saying! I Cant Turn Around and Rainy Mourning in this collection are a treat to here and if you own these albums the remastering is remarkable. Again I didnt think I would enjoy this as much as I do being a die hard Supremes and Four Tops fan but I can tell you if you dont get this now you will regret it!

I am so glad you are telling people this set is worth the wait. With the exception of More hits by the Supremes I have NEVER been this excited about a Motown box set CD as I am this one. I like the Marvelettes and always have I have 4 of their albums but this set has had me rethink my original thoughts. When I first got Sophisticated Soul I listened to it a lot but hearing it in this context makes me appreciate it more. I know some people who are in the Gladys camp as lead and some who are in the Wanda camp and prefer her leads. At one time I was in the Wanda camp but a few years ago I learned to appreciate Gladys but after today I love both of them just the same! I was f****** impressed with how well she handled some of this material that was unreleased. My favorite Gladys lead was Too Many Fish in the Sea and Postman and Playboy I thought anybody could do those songs they are so simple. After many years of prayer and counsel.....LOL I have found that this set shows the Marvelettes could handle anything given to them. Had it not been for their internal problems [[sorry Wanda I love you just the same) with proper attention they could have easily stayed on the charts. I love the remake of Fading Away and always have. I know I sound like a broken record but if anyone is thinking about getting this collection and you can afford it please dont wait. I got Deliver the Singles and somehow it got lost and I had to wait all these years for THIS!

It's so satisfying to hear that this set has inspired such passion and interest. THANK YOU.

On this specific question: we did go back and newly remaster the "stray" Marvelettes tracks that had been issued after the 1960s but before now. For one or two of those we did find a stereo master - I am sorry that now I don't recall which tune[[s) - and I can assure you, in the effort to be certain we didn't miss an opportunity to deliver an alternate mix, we listened at different times over a few weeks [[to keep the ears fresh) and the mono was the winner each time.

Perhaps the stereo versions might be included on a future 'A Cellarful of Motown' or other such collections.
Thanks for giving us such wonderful goodies, delivered with such care and detail. It is much appreciated.

I think Gladys and Wanda complimented each other on lead vocals, much in the same way that Eddie K and David R. complimented each other. As popular as they were, after listening to disc 4 of this set one can't help but think about all the untapped potential the group still had.

I have just finished listening to "Forever More" over headphones, and "In Full Bloom" has just replaced the Four Tops' "Still Waters Run Deep" as my alltime favourite Motown album. Also, "Marionette" and "A Breathtaking Guy" from "Return of..." sound so much better in stereo than the mono singles I am more familiar with.

Incidentally, despite singling out Wanda tracks above, I like Gladys and Wanda equally as lead singers.

I think prior to Gladys' departure having 2 distinctive lead singers is what separated the Marvelettes from the other girl groups of the day. Onstage they had a good flow of changing leads . Ofcourse Ann could have kept the 2 lead thing going. I will say that I like alot of the In Full Bloom tracks better today then I did back in'69.

I think Kat said Ann did sing some of Gladys' leads, but by that time the focus was on Wanda. Plus, you gotta remember the Marvelettes were not performing live much by 1969. They did a few dates in Detroit. Ann Bogan was still singing with her gospel group on Sundays.

I've just played Disc 4 for the second time, and the unreleased tracks are so good. You can hear the embryonic Motown Sound developing.

This is probably the best Hip-OSelect release yet and essential for all Motown fans. It is remarkable to think that all you have to do is to buy this and Volume 1 to obtain the entire Marvelettes' Tamla output.

If there's any justice in the world, this will sell out quickly. My advice is to buy this before it's too late.

Not according to the sleeve notes. "The Grass Is Greener On the Other Side" is a demo for the Marvelettes, but not them singing, and as mentioned above there were some band tracks assigned to the Marvelettes for which no vocals were recorded.

Just listening to disc 4 for the first time. Was Ann still really part of The Marvelettes in December 1969 when the lead vocals for Why'd You Do It were recorded? Wanda recorded Change Of Heart in February of 1970 - but all of The Return Of seems to be June 1970. Was the final breakup after Feb 1970?
