In doing a little research for a blog on the late George David Weiss, I ran across this nifty version of "Lullaby Of Birdland" with Bobby McFerrin and Laise Sanches.

Does anyone know anything about Laise Sanches? That's a nice piece of vocallese they she and Bobby engage in, and I was really impressed by her ability to keep pitch. I'd be interested in finding a CD of her based on this performance.

Doug, she's the latest in a long line of singers and/or musicians with Cape Verdean backgrounds. Cape Verde is an island off
the coast of Africa that was colonised by Porugal. Whether people know it or not , we've been listening to music by it's children for many years whether one is a follower of "world music" like I am with Cesaria Evora, the "barefoot diva", soul
music as with Tavares, or jazz with Horace Silver. Laise is really new in the business, her own album is not even out yet
as far as I know. I'm sure she'll do well and she already is drawing the appeal of a lot of young listeners. Being a real good
looker certainly won't hurt either. I just recently got into another Cape Verdean singer, Carmen Souza, who as good as I feel
she is will never have the following Laise I'm predicting will in a years time...

Thank you, Splanky. That clip [[the only one I've found of her) is from 2008. I'd sure like to see her in a small group jazz setting. I think she has the voice for it. And you're right. Carmen Souza IS impressive....
