I just found this on Amazon tonight.

http://www.amazon.com/PERCY-SLEDGE-Atlantic-Recordings-4-Disc/dp/B004IMODZ4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321235037&sr=8-1

I had no idea it had been released last year. Does anyone out there have this box and would you mind posting the track listing for it? The tracks are not listed on Amazon. It contains 104 tracks. I have 81, and I'd love to know what I'm missing, though I'm not sure I'd pay $128.89 to get them!

Thanks Gary. Where did you find this?

Does anyone here own this set and what do you think of it?

His voice would probably grate on my nerves after @ 3 songs. LOL! Hi Oldies!

Rhino Handmade released the Percy Sledge "The Atlantic Recordings" box set late in 2010, a year or so after they put out a similar box set for Wilson Pickett. I have each of these box sets and they're both very well done. I only had approximately half of the tracks on the Percy Sledge box set in my collection before I bought it, so to me it was a worthwhile purchase. I had heard all the cuts from the four Percy Sledge albums that were released on the Atlantic label in the states during the years 1966-1968; however, many of the non-album Atlantic singles on the box set were new to me. Other than "Stop the World Tonight" and "True Love Travels on A Gravel Road", I didn't have any of these non-album A and B single sides--most of which are pretty good. While there aren't any lost masterpieces among these single sides, they're all solid soul of the Muscle Shoals variety. Likewise, most of the tracks on the box set that had only been released in Europe are worth a listen. On the other hand, I was a little disappointed with the five previously unreleased tracks and the live tracks on the box set.

The remastering on the Percy Sledge box set sounds great, although, in my opinion there's too much mono. The box set is in chronological order, and I can accept the mono on the first disc, but some of the later tracks on the other three discs which are in mono have previously been released in stereo elsewhere. However, that's Rhino for you--they seem to have an affinity for mono. The booklet is excellent [[rare photos, album covers, trade ads, etc.), but the size of the booklet is only 7" x 7". I liked the early days of CD box sets better when they came in old-fashioned LP-sized 12" x 12" boxes and the booklets were big as well.

If you decide you want the Percy Sledge box set, there's no reason to pay $128 for it. I believe it's still available directly from the Rhino Handmade website for $79.98. Shipping is free for orders over $50. I got mine directly from the Rhino Handmade website last year during the Holiday season when they were running a 20% off special. They may possibly run a similar special sometime during the Holiday season this year.

Both the Percy & Pickett sets are great.

Didn't know he was still recording for Atlantic in 1972...this sounds like a cool box set!

Best,

Hi Nothing But Soul - Thank you so much for your post. I wasn't aware there is a Rhino Handmade website so I'll be checking that out. The more mono the better for me so this might be good. However, I'm hoping to be able to just buy the tracks I want because as I said above, I have 81 already and I don't much care for the live performances anyway.

Gary - Thanks again for the track listing. It will make my job much easier.

Nosey - Hi, sorry his voice gets on your nerves, haha, I love it. I just discovered A Lonely Violin yesterday and it brought me to tears. He has a very unique voice which I've always felt is so filled with emotion, love that southern soul.
