For Americans, perhaps one of the most obscure acts of the 1970's. I only really
"discovered" them fairly recently. I know we have lots of Euro-fans here on SDF,
so perhaps they can chime in on here. These two videos have been in heavy rotation
on my computer recently:)

I love Boney M. I recently purchased a 5 CD set, which contains five of their most successful studio albums from the 70's. It's called, "Boney M Original Album Classics". It was a really good deal for the price. One of my favourite Boney M tracks is "Gotta Go Home", which has been sampled in the very popular Ducksauce remix.

ajk93 ..

I believe that "Rivers Of Babylon" b/w "Brown Girl In The Ring" sold well over a million copies in Britain back in 1978 .. it was on the charts for 40 weeks and spent 6 of those at #1.

The group were HUGE here in 1977/8/9 and had 9 top 10 hits, including 2 #1s [[the other #1 was "Mary's Boy Child"). I believe they were even bigger [[if that is possible) in Holland and Germany. Mind you, amongst hard-core British Soul/Funk fans they were the group that everyone loved to hate .. and I bought NONE of their hits :)

Actually I quite liked their version of "Rivers Of Babylon", though the version that I would listen to out of choice would be the original Reggae/Rocksteady version by THE MELODIANS ..

Here it is ..

One BONEY M tune that I do really like is what I think was their first 45 .. "Do You Wanna Bump" .. which is a thinly disguised remake of the old mid '60s Ska classic by PRINCE BUSTER .. "Al Capone" ..

Although I commend them for covering The Creation's pop classic "Painter Man"...I didn't care at all for much of what they did & Brown Girl In The Ring la la la la la...nearly drove me round the #$£%ing bend...I'm still in counselling some 33 years later.

Bobby Farrell the male in the group left earth this year

Very sad. There is a video of Liz, Maizie and Marcia on Youtube taken after his funeral. It was the first time the ladies had reunited in many, many years. They even acknowledged that it was unfortunate that they reunited under such sad circumstances. For years they had not talked to one another due to competing tribute acts/tours.
