I've got a geeky request but it's for a project and I know there are plenty of fans around here who might could help; I'm curious about the Motown inner album sleeves like this one that would advertise other Motown/Tamla albums [[the one pictured features 10 Supremes' albums):

Looking through my Motown albums I could find inner sleeves that feature/adverstise all the Supremes albums [[up to FAREWELL) in a similar way except these 5 albums:

MERRY CHRISTMAS
LET THE SUNSHINE IN
TOGETHER [[with the temptations)
CREAM OF THE CROP
ON BROADWAY [[with the temptations)

Does anyone know if these were advertised on the inner sleeves and, if so, what albums I might find them in? Or possibly even scan them for me if you have them? Thanks in advance...

The inner sleeves were discussed about 10 days ago. Scans of many of the sleeves can be found at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/24608030@N06/

To my knowledge, the albums you listed didn't appear on any album inner sleeves. All but MERRY CHRISTMAS did appear on sleeves for 45s.

Also, I wouldn't buy certain albums hoping for a specific inner sleeve. Albums were pressed at different times and different plants. Therefore, one album didn't always have the same inner sleeve.

I know from experience. I bought the DIANA ROSS PRESENTS THE JACKSON 5 album only because my cousin had it, and I loved the inner sleeve. When I bought it, it had a totally different inner sleeve, albeit one I had never seen. But it wasn't the one I was expecting.

Thanks for the info and that great link! I did a search for a thread about inner sleeves before posting but didn't find anything so I really appreciate it...those are great scans.

So the 45 sleeves advertised albums, too? Did they look like the inner album sleeves just with a 45-record hole in middle? Kind of like this maybe?

The 45 sleeves looked similar to the one you posted. However, the one you posted is from circa 1971, and if not mistaken, might only have albums on one side. The other side is an ad for THE MOTOWN STORY. Some of the earlier 45 sleeves had albums shown on both sides, but no song info. Just the catalog number.

Quite often I have bought second hand albums, and it has just a plain white sleeve or something advertising Capitol, Colombia or whatever albums. Luck of the draw. On a different note, STAX used to advertise their albums on inner sleeves also in full color. Nice too..Paulo xxx

Record company "inner sleeves" that advertised different albums in a record label's catalog was a standard operating procedure during the '60s and '70s and I remember the Motown "album sleeves" from the time I started buying Motown LPs in the late '60s. And yes, Stax Records did the same with their "inner sleeves" [[I've still got the original LP of Wattstax from 1973 and it has the inner sleeve that made reference to the Wattstax event on one side and some of their albums on the other side).
