ROCK and roll icon Bill Wyman will be joined by The Supremes star Mary Wilson next week, as his Rhythm Kings band performs at Southport Theatre.

Former Rolling Stones bassist Wyman is the driving force behind the Rhythm Kings - a set of virtuoso musicians who superbly bring to life the kind of classic rhythm and blues that first inspired him to pick up the guitar as a teenager.

Mary Wilson, who lays claim to a string of The Supremes' number one hits including ‘Baby Love', ‘Stop, In The Name of Love' and ‘You Can't Hurry Love', previously performed with Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings at a special Royal charity gala in aid of the 60th anniversary of the Red Cross and will join them again for their 36-date tour.

To catch the show when it comes to the resort on October 18, call the Ticket Centre on 0844 871 3021 or log on to www.atgtickets.com/southporttheatre.

Tickets are also available at the theatre box office, open Monday to Saturday between 11am and 4pm.

Just returned home after attending the opening night of this tour at the Grand Theater, Swansea, and I have to say what a fantastic live band, even if they are all claiming their pensions they still rock !!!
Great selection of covers by the band, Etta James, Jackie Wilson, Chuck Berry, the Everly Brothers, James Brown, then Mary Wilson joined the Band and sang, Baby Love, Stop! in the name of Love and You cant hurry love, she had a good response from the crowd, and had some banter going with Bill Wyman and Georgie Fame about the TAMI show in the 60s.
In the 2nd half Miss Wilson covered Big Mama Thorntons Hound Dog, Nora Jones Don't know why and Creedence Clearwater Green River, and returned for the encore a cover of Dancing in the Street. Must mention Beverly Skusse, the female vocalist with the Band, she has an amazing voice, her versions of It's a Mans World and I put a spell on you stole the show.
Enjoyed the night, ticket price £30 was a little pricey, but worth it , if the tour is coming to your town Check it out!

Not crazy about the Supremes songs Mary is doing for that show as they're the one most unsuitable for her voice IMO--there's a reason why Baby Love and Stop are audience participation numbers in her Supremes/oldies show. But I would love to hear her take on Hound Dog.

Bill Whyman and Mary Wilson at Southport Theatre

Bill Whyman Rhythm Kings
Southport Theatre
6/10
Famous for being the bass guitarist with the Rolling Stones, Bill Whyman has now come back to his musical roots with Bill Whyman’s Rhythm Kings, a nine-piece combo of virtuoso musicians.
On Tuesday night they played two-hour gig at Southport Theatre with a set comprising jazz, blues, soul, rockabilly and good old rock’n’roll. Supporting him were Graham Broad on drums, Terry Taylor on guitar, Geraint Watkins on piano, The brilliant Albert Lee on guitar, Georgie Fame on organ, Frank Mead and Nick Payn on horns, and Beverly Skeete on vocals.
The band, with various line-ups, has been going for 12 years, with the newest member, Geraint, playing with them for the past three years.
The night kicked off with a raucous rendering of Jitterbug Boogie followed by the delicious Beverly Skeete singing a soulful Tell Mama to a big band sound from the combo. Beverly has such range and her voice has that blues quality that keeps you mesmerised.
Each musician had his turn to foreground his expertise, especially Terry Taylor with amazing guitar riffs, and hornmen Frank Mead and Nick Payn who boogied the night away with full-bodied sound.
Georgie Fame, of the Blue Flames, on organ was in good voice, and seemed to be running the show. Bill Whyman, who mainly stood and played bass, took little part in the show and although he introduced the musicians, for the most part just stood and played looking totally disinterested though no doubt behind the scenes it is he who has put the whole show together. But it would have been nice to at least see him smile!
The star of the show was guest Mary Wilson of the Supremes and at 67 years, bopped around the stage and was such a spark of fun. Her voice is as good as ever with renderings of her great hits, Stop in the Name of Love, Dancing in the Street, and I Need Love. She interacted brilliantly with the audience and was in great shape for her age.
However, though this show had some brilliant spots, the main choice of music seemed a little samey. There were some dramatic interludes, like when Skeete sang It’s a Man’s World, showing off her great vocal skill, and the tender So Sad when Skeete duo-ed with Terry Taylor, bringing the evocative Everley’s hit a new poignancy.
Having Mary Wilson on the show lifted what could have been a rather run-of-the-mill set. There is no doubt that Whyman’s musicians are all masters of their art, but at times it seemed their playing could have meshed better.
As this is only the second gig in the run maybe this will change.
