SoulBoy is the stunning brand new soundtrack to the first ever film to be set to a Northern Soul background ..........
A trailer for the film ............ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_6NS_lLgis

It's 1974 in Stoke on Trent, Britain is plagued by power cuts, strikes and boot-boy aggro on the football terraces. Joe McCain [[Martin Compston) and best friend Russ Mountjoy [[Alfie Allen) are bored of their mundane lives going nowhere. Enter hair-dresser Jane [[Nicola Burley), blonde, brassy, and moving to a different beat and sound, she introduces Joe to the concept of all-nighters at the infamous Wigan Casino and an exotic underworld of drugs, sex and soul music. Joe becomes immersed in the Northern soul scene feeling as though he has finally found somewhere he belongs. Swept along on this tide of pulsating dance and lust, Joe becomes embroiled in the darker side of soul scene that will put his friendship to the test and force him to choose between his heart and his soul.

About The Soundtrack: This fantastic film set to be the British film of the summer is supported by a brilliant soundtrack crammed with 50 red-hot Northern Soul anthems that screams `Get Up And Dance'!! Featured on this 2 disc set is an exclusive Northern Soul cover of `On A Magic Carpet Ride' recorded by Gabriella Cilmi, the track also appears in the film.
Also included are all the superb tunes that pulsate throughout the film from the likes of Al Wilson, Gloria Jones, Dean Parrish, Yvonne Baker, the Detroit Spinners plus many more. The great music doesn't stop there with a bonus mix tape disc compiled by the lead character Joe McCain with more powerful cuts that celebrate this unique scene. SoulBoy authentically captures the magic of the Wigan Casino and Northern Soul era, while the soundtrack gives a wonderful insight into the glorious music that shaped the world's first underground music scene. The booklet introduction is by SoulBoy director Shimmy Marcus. Above all the soundtrack not only provides a scintillating accompaniment to the film but also works as a great essential album in its own right.

there has been some nasty comments on another soul forum about this movie, which have been totally uncalled for & spiteful. Most of the comments have been made by people who have not yet even seen the movie, it is not on general release until 3 Sept. I am really looking forward to it and hope it has great success at the box office!

This sounds pretty damn interesting. After attending Soultrip USA & seeing how the scene works, I gained a lot of respect for Northern Soul & hose who love it.

What are the chances of the flick making it to the US?

Oh My God! This I HAVE GOT TO SEE. Takes me WAY back to my one and only visit to the Wigan Casino, and the Twisted Wheel too! God, I had the tank tops, the loons, the shoes too. AND the haircut. Got rid of those, but, THANK GOD, I kept, and still love the MUSIC. Ah shades of my youth. It was only getting Blues & Soul magazine from 1972, and reading Dave Godins column, and loving all those Motown re-issues of the time, that I became a fan, I guess. The SPEED in which I moved onto Jazz Funk here in the South, was because there was no club that played Northern Soul back then. Its funny that some of the tracks that have become Northern Soul anthems now, were some of the tracks I danced too at the clubs in the Jazz-Funk- Soul Clubs then. I.E. Commodores, Eloise Laws, Barrino Brothers, Sisters Love. Then i had a detor into techno/trance/hard house, but thats another story HA HA. I love all sorts of music, but AT LEAST I drew the line at Heavy Metal [[UURRGH)....PAULO xxxx

The film got a lot of stick from UK NS fans after it's release, but I watched it last night & thought it a creditable effort.
The 'dance off' towards the end of the film was a bit 'over the top' but it fitted in well in the story line. The music was great & if any US listies want to get an idea of what the 1970's UK NS scene was like, then this will certainly enlighten them.

I noticed this was being shown late last night and decided to watch it. It was certainly much better than I had expected and I wouldn't mind seeing it again, I was half expecting it to be full of anacronisms yet I can't say I noticed any. The producers of the film managed to splice together [[I think) archive footage with scenes staged for the movie in a very clever way.

I was also surprised at how short the film seemed [[according to the TV guide it was actually 75 minutes long) which was another good sign as poor films tend to drag.

Incidentally, looking at the CD track list that JSmith posted a couple of years ago, the tracks on CD 1 were the ones used in the film [[ "Tainted Love", "You Didn't Say A Word", "Too Late" etc. ) it looks like none of the tracks on CD 2 were actually used.

I can't complain about the music, but the storyline was too one-dimensional.

I missed the showing on BBC as I was away .Serves me right for not checking Radio Times prior to going on Holiday. I did look at Radio Times, and was surprised that it was Film of the Day in their reviews....So I hope a lot of 'casual' viewers decided to watch it and that the music impressed them.
Must get a copy of the DVD

If this topic interest you you might want to watch out for a 90 minute plus NORTHERN SOUL DOCUMENTARY to be released on DVD sometime before Christmas.Basically telling the story of Northern from the days of The Twisted Wheel through to the closure of Wigan Casino. As a contributor to the film I had a chance to see the finished product this week and biased as I am, I think it will be well received. The documentary looks at the scene through the eyes of deejays, promoters, dancers and performers using vintage footage, excerpts from This England and interviews filmed at the legendary 100 Club in London and the soon to be demolished Twisted Wheel in Manchester.
The project co ordinator and ideas man for the dvd is Glenn Gunton of Joeboy/Outta Sight for Odeon Videos. He has been involved in the scene for many years.
Final release details of the project titled KEEP ON BURNING will be anounced soon.
I hope this is of interest.

If I remember rightly Norman Jopling mentions the London scene.Norman is, of course an authority on the sixties London scene, being one of the respected journalists at the time and very much involved in events of the time.[[I wish he would write a book)
Coming soon from Charly records a cd of music from the Scene Club in London and another relating to the Twisted Wheel with an emphasis on the early days. These cds to are part of a series called CLUB SOUL and along with later releases for other clubs [[the Torch, Catacombs,Mecca,Wigan and Stafford) should be of interest to anybody interested in the development of soul clubs in the UK.
Again I hope this posting is of interest and relevant.
Thanks snakepit for informing the Wheel folks.I think the cd will have a few surprises.
Re Soulboy- I found it entertaining but flawed.A bit of fun with a rubbish dance off.

I am told the Keeps on Burning DVD will be released early December and will have as an extra feature the full 1970s Granada TV programme This England [[about Wigan Casino).
The Club Soul cds starting with The Scene Club and the Twisted Wheel will be available early next year.
Hope this is of interest.

No problem. Any further updates ...I'll post on the FM forum....tracklists etc.

Re Soulboy........I was into 'rare' soul prior to Wigan...didn't go to the Torch, or Wigan in fact.
What strikes me is the 'bandwagon' effect, regarding clothes/fashion. Vests, patches and the bags etc. No doubt we had fashions in the period I was clubbing [[went to the Wheel 3/4 times before the close).......but don't remember any sense of 'uniforms' and appendages as this film suggests. Can't vouch for the Torch........
