May Sister Sylvia be with the Lord now. I will play Rappers Delight in her honor.

Another Great R & B artist is gone. I remember Sylvia with her partner Mickey "Guitar" Baker back in the fifties when they were doing Love Is Strange [[a big hit of the day) and then her involvement with Stang, Turbo and All Platinum and they were cranking out the hits with a number of artists. My condolences to Joe jr. and the family. RIP Sylvia

I just heard the announcement a few hours ago on WCBS-FM. She was one of a kind. A true music lady, a businesswoman. Condolences go out to Joey and the rest of the family. Rest In Peace Ms. Sylvia!

I have never understood why there has not been a documentary done on this woman. She is not only a soul and rap pioneer but she is a black woman. RAP crossover would have been nothing without her and other than little blips and blurbs her name doesnt come out as much as Grandmaster Flash and the Sugarhill Gang. RIP Sylvia!

I think I have seen a documentary once. It was some time ago.

I asked basically the same question that Steph did on the old forum years ago and got no answer and I have never
seen a docu on Sylvia anywhere. That kind of thing would surely have shown up at any of the black film festivals I've attended in New York dang near every year for the past 20+...Still there's the chance I missed it. I will be searching for it
today no doubt. I LOVED Sylvia. I understand people like to reference her early involvement with Rap music, even Felix
Hernandez emailed us an obit calling her the mother of hip hop, but I will remember most her plush but not pornographic
sexuality in her music and her great work with among others, the Moments, who I've rarely seen mentioned in current
discussions of her legacy...Anyway, I'd like to see some mention of her learning to play guitar with Mickey Baker or some
talk about how she viewed other artist of her time. I know she loved herself some Marvin Gaye...
RIP, Sweet Stuff, you spread over my ears like a rare disease...sho nuff...

There is a wonderful obituary in The Guardian newspaper here in the UK today all about Sylvia, one of the first records I ever bought was "Pillow Talk" and to this day I still love this brilliant record. Sylvia wrote and produced hits such as Love On A Two Way Street [[1970) for the Moments, Shame, Shame, Shame for Shirley & Company, her biggest hit though was Pillow Talk written and performed by Sylivia after the song had been turned down as too risque by the soul star Al Green.
Pillow Talk reached No 3 in the US and No 14 in the UK in 1973.

R.I.P

I think what you guys might be thinking about far as a documentary on Sylvia was her in this documentary called "And You Don't Stop: 30 Years of Hip-Hop". I remember seeing this when it first aired on TV years ago. The full thing is up on youtube and she shows up in part 3.

At the age of ten, I was a bit amazed that radio would play "Pillow Talk". It was always awkward when the song came on and my mother happened to be listening too. The heaving and whispering was enough to make me want to turn the station off from embarrassment.

Yes, I agree with you all, Sylvia's work as a producer and writer is not given enough mention. I mean, what incredible talent to turn out stuff like this:

And how fascinating and ironic that Sylvia herself was one of the VERY few artists in music history to have a gap of more than 10 years between hit records, and then she herself be responsible for ANOTHER feat of taking another artist from the past and giving her a new hit after more than a decade:

Very true, jf, that in itself is fodder for a great biopic...

The funny thing about "Pillow Talk" is that she wrote it with the intention of having Al Green record it. His refusal to do so turned into a stroke of fortune for Sylvia who decided to record it herself.

Personally, I'd rather not see a biopic & will simply say Sylvia thank you for the music & may you rest in peace.

My sincere condolences to her family & loved ones.
