Nice playlists Souldonuts. Interesting that some good tracks from 1967 are included. Here in the U.S. ,1967 was a very good year
for defining what we call Soul music ,as opposed to what was previously known as R&B. Soul per say was not based on the same blues structure as R&B. The term "Soul Music" ,was coined by Berry Gordy. It described the new sound of R&B ,that developed out of Motown ,Chicago and Philly ,while in the south , R&B's blues structure was the basis for Stax and the other southern based lables. In fact ,SOUL MUSIC ,which is based on R&B ,was the key to R&B's surviving what is called here, the "British Invasion" of 63-67. Those groups like The Beatles, Stones ,The Who etc, would eventually incorporate some elements of the Blues/R&B and Soul in their music.

Also I wanted to ask you if you consider your playlist/compilations as Northern Soul? Some people here in the U.S. don't understand that what's called Northern Soul, is actually American Soul/R&B music [[circa 1960 -71) that is popular in many clubs in the Northern U.K. I think that's interesting ,that the genre is based on imported music ,and is so popular.

Hi Daddy, here is a good defintion of what we call Northern Soul in the UK
Northern soul is a music and dance movement that emerged from the British mod [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mod_[[subculture)) scene, initially in northern England in the late 1960s. Northern soul mainly consists of a particular style of black American [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_American_music) soul music [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soul_music) based on the heavy beat and fast tempo of the mid-1960s Tamla Motown [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motown_Records) sound. The northern soul movement, however, generally eschews Motown or Motown-influenced music that has met with significant mainstream success. The recordings most prized by enthusiasts of the genre are usually by lesser-known artists, and were initially released only in limited numbers, often by small regional United States labels such as Ric-Tic and Golden World [[Detroit), Mirwood [[Los Angeles) and Shout and Okeh [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okeh_Records) [[New York/Chicago).
Northern soul is also associated with particular dance styles and fashions that grew out of the underground rhythm & soul scene of the late 1960s, at venues such as the Twisted Wheel [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twisted_Wheel) in Manchester [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester). This scene [[and the associated dances and fashions) quickly spread to other UK dancehalls and nightclubs [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightclub) like the Catacombs [[Wolverhampton), the Highland Rooms at Blackpool Mecca [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackpool_Mecca), Golden Torch [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Torch) [[Stoke-on-Trent [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoke-on-Trent)), and Wigan Casino [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wigan_Casino). As the favoured beat became more uptempo and frantic, by the early 1970s, northern soul dancing became more athletic, somewhat resembling the later dance styles of disco [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disco) and break dancing [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Break_dancing). Featuring spins, flips, karate kicks and backdrops, club dancing styles were often inspired by the stage performances of touring American soul acts such as Little Anthony & The Imperials [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Anthony_%26_The_Imperials) and Jackie Wilson [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_Wilson).
During the Northern soul scene's initial years in the late 1960s and early 1970s, popular Northern Soul records were usually not recent releases, and generally dated from the mid-1960s. This meant that the movement was sustained [[and "new" recordings added to playlists) by prominent DJs discovering rare and previously overlooked records. Later on, certain clubs and DJs began to move away from the 1960s Motown sound and began to play newer releases with a more contemporary sound.
My playlists especially on my radio show doesnt cover the Northern side of the music, more upto date urban and indie soul, plus what we call 70.s Modern Soul[[ i have put up a podcast to test the waters here on the forum...)
Northern soul as we call it is still an aquired taste in the UK, having said that i still drop the occasional northern soul record on my show.
Cheers
Andy
