New Madonna Movie Gets Scathing Reviews

D.I.S.H.
Madonna's W.E. labelled inadvertent comedy by critics after screening at Venice Film Festival

September 2, 2011

The reviews are starting to come in on Madonna's new movie – and the reviews are not good.

The Material Girl directed the new historical drama W.E. which just premiered at the Venice Film Festival and which is set to play at the Toronto International Film Festival later this month.

Though the picture has already been picked up by the Weinstein Company for distribution this December, critics are saying the pop star's movie about the real-life love story between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII is hilarious – even though it's not a comedy.

"Screamingly, inadvertently funny in parts," writes the Times of London. "By intercutting newsreel, fantasies and careful re-creations of the 1930s milieu surrounding the king, Madonna manages to create scenes which – perhaps to her surprise – had 'em rolling in the aisles at Venice."

British newspaper the Guardian called the movie an "extraordinarily silly, preening, fatally mishandled film," while the Playlist complains, "The camera barely sits still, stock changes from shot to shot, people walk down corridors in slow motion, all without rhyme or reason."

Not everyone hates the pic however. A reviewer for the Daily Mail stood up for Madonna, while taking a swing at his fellow critics.

"A lot of people will loathe it, simply because it's been made by Madonna. But if they were to watch it with no knowledge of who directed, they would be pleasantly surprised. They might even find much of it enjoyable."

Now there's a shocker. Bad reviews after her masterstrokes "Body of Evidence" and "Shangai Surprise?"

Are we really surprised?
I actually enjoyed parts of Body Of Evidence. You can probably guess what parts.

Although this time she's directing and not trying to act before the camera.
