AdvertisementSAN FRANCISCO, July 21 [[UPI) -- Music icon Diana Ross is to perform her first concert in San Francisco in more than 40 years, the show's promoters said Thursday.

Ross is to take the stage Sept. 16 at the Golden Gate Theatre. She last performed in the city with her group The Supremes at the Fairmont Hotel's Venetian Room in 1969.

"Diana Ross, her music and her voice are legendary," organizers Rick Bartalini Presents said in a news release. "The concert, a full theatrical experience, will include breathtaking costumes and stage design, along with a live string and horn section."

Ross has sold more than 100 million records and recorded 18 No. 1 songs.

40 years since she last played San Fran? What gives? What's the story behind her not playing the city? Has she just played Oakland or other spots in the San Francisco metro area, just not the city itself? Sounds strange..

I don't know, perhaps Diana was told the city of San Francisco doesn't regulate the putting out of Rat Poison backstage? ;)

Now to be serious. Diana's popularity in the seventies and eighties meant playing the really large venues [[stadiums or casinos) where she could make large amounts of money in a short period of time and not having to schlep from city to city. It also gave her more time at home to be the devoted mother she is. I don't believe she had a grudge against the city by any means. I think it has more to do with the size of show she graduated to as a solo act and continued with for the most part until the nineties. When you've got backup dancers, singers, projection screens, and special effects its hard to squeeze that into intimate venues. Now that she's scaled her show down to fit theaters it allows her to hit new markets she hasn't "Worked Overtime" and lets fans who want to see her but wont travel to LA or Oakland to enjoy her in a more intimate and personal way....

During the 1980s Diana Ross regularly played the Circle Star which was in San Carlos [[on the peninsula south of San Francisco), as well as the larger arenas in Mountainview and Concord. In the 1990s she was at Lake Tahoe during the summer months. Lately, we have seen her at the Paramount in Oakland, Mountain Winery, the former Luther Burbank Center in Santa Rosa. Now we are seeing her at the Marin Center in San Rafael, Yountville, and Santa Rosa. Glad to see her in SF. I have tickets to the September 17 show in San Rafael. Will purchase tickets to the SF show at Golden Gate Theater [[I live in SF).

Not cheap for good seats. How many people will the Golden Gate accomodate?

San Francisco went on sale this morning and is all but sold out. I was thinking of going but not at broker prices as orchestra seats start at $200 and go up to $1200 per seat.
