The Eagles caught lip syncing their live shows

“This is huge” is the name of the YouTube video posted by Wings of Pegasus.

In the video, he does a computer analysis of Don Henley’s “live” vocal to demonstrate it is not live. In fact, it was recorded in a studio to sound live. Don Henley has been using this exact same vocal recording for years in his concerts.

I can only imagine how many other older artists are doing the same.

I think it is called a click track that allows the prerecorded voices to be used over music being played live. They mouth the words perfectly by reading them from a teleprompter at the foot of the stage.

Is there any artist over a certain age not using click tracks today at least during part of the show if not the entire show?

Spoiler alert: Frankie Valli has been doing it for years. There's a video showing him lip syncing the high notes on Sherry for over a decade up on YouTube. Give him a break though - he still tours heavily at 90!

All that being said - there is nothing wrong to an extent of singing over a vocal support track or lip syncing in my book. Our idols age and most singers would be out of a job after their 50's if we demanded they sounded just like they did in their 20's. A warts and all show might be authentic but that's not the expectation most have when they see acts like The Eagles. They want it to be 1977 again and at those ticket prices it should be.

He doesn't sound perfect. He sounds authentic. And the banter itself in real time is worth the experience.

My hunch is that Frankie Valli does not sing a single note live. No 90-year-old can sound like he does on stage. Impossible.

Diana sang live at Glastonbury last summer, and, it was a train wreck. I heard the vocals and it was cringe city. They talked about her horrible vocals the next day on UK radio.

Suddenly, videos appeared with Ross sounding fine at Glastonbury. Was the original live vocal replaced with the prerecorded click track? Why wasn’t the click track used during the live show in place of those off live vocals? Who screwed up ?

For very different reasons, The Supremes At The Copa live album was also done in the studio.

Diana was ill at Glastonbury last summer, in her concerts later that summer in Europe she sounded fine.

Madonna was terrible in her live performance at Eurovision in 2019 in Israel. Her vocals were also replaced for clips of the show.

yes, the real deal! When an artist allows for zoomed jumbo screens of themselves singing on stage, chances are high the vocals are live. Otherwise, they can be more easily caught.

Fake singers will often hold the mic very high and close to their mouth, thereby completely covering the lips and mouth.

Maybe its time for a revealing of live performers who are fake . A list of the offenders.

We can start with Janet Jackson and Whitney Houston.

Sadly, most mainstream performers now lipsync at least parts of their shows. I would argue that the list of artists who presently resort to lip syncing is much longer than the list of those who don't. Back in the day, an artist would have to sing entirely live, but then on the other hand, it wasn't uncommon to hear of concert cancellations due to an artist having lost their voice and/or illness. These days, the financial implications of cancelling a show has skyrocketed. Everything is much more expensive, including the cost of insuring these big tours. In light of all of this, it makes sense that most artists now would be lip-syncing for at least a segment of their show, in order to give their voices a break. Physically, it is not possible to be singing night after night for 2+ hours on stage. If you're Gladys Knight, who is booked for a weekly casino date, where she's doing a 75 minute set with breaks interspersed throughout...then ok. Completely different scenario.

Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart are back on tour and will be doing shows for the next 6-7 months. Right now Ann is singing everything live, but doesn't appear to have much voice left. And she doesn't seem to be in great health either. If they finish the tour, I wonder if they may start using some pre recorded vocals to help out Ann?

I saw Tom Jones in 2022 [he was 81 at the time] and as far as I could tell, he also still delivers his entire show with 100% live vocals. His voice has held up impressively well too. He can still belt out those classics. He's taken care of his instrument.
