Marvin's highly stylized version of the National Anthem at the '83 NBA All Star game has received plenty of attention, however I prefer this performance of the song by Marvin on Dec 14, 1974 at Oakland Raiders vs Cowboys game. The POWER and control of his voice rivals that of an opera star [[even in a cold, open-air stadium)! AND--no drum machine, lol. This version didn't appear to create any controversy, as did the '83 version, yet he still Marvin-izes it.

[[Also note his attire is similar to the photos from his Let's Get It On LP from previous year. Same red hat?

...sorry, date in header should be 1974

I love the 1974 version...he could really soar when he wanted to. On the earlier version it's so markedly disciplined, such a polite rendition. And on the later one he seems tentative, like he's not sure he can hit the high notes so pitches it in a lower key.

What an amazing talent, and how fun to hear these three very different versions of our national anthem!

...and not to mention I love the haircuts in '74!
