The other day, during a trip to Lanzarote/Kanarean Islands, I heard the original [[stereo) Version of this great song by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas on my 15-year old I-Pod, containing 1042 motown songs and soon afterwards the [[Mono)-Version of Diana Ross and the Supremes. And I truly believe, its the same version, only the voice of Diana was laid over the track; almost the background vocals I would identify as those of the Vandellas from the Original Track. Maybe I`m wrong, but if not: did this happen often, that a Cover-Version of a song retain the whole instrumentation and only the new voice[[s) were laid over ?

please excuse my bad English, but I hope you understand :D

The track for "In My Lonely Room" by both Martha & The Vandellas and The Supremes is just one example of Motown Records using the same backing track for different artists.

Sorry, but these do not utilize the same track. CC's track was recorded May 27, 1967. DRATS' track recorded March 14, 1968. They're even in different keys.

By golly, you're right, Dan. But they sure sound similar, at least to my ears.

...and then there's.....the Cameo Parkway cover of "In My Lonely Room", which they called "the 81" by Candy & The Kisses to nearly the same track as Martha's original.

And then there's "Just Another Lonely Night"-Temptations / Four Tops

Of course we know that the Four Tops' version has Levi singing with the background vocals by the Temptations/Andantes

It is the same Funk Bros track on In My Lonely Room. For the Supremes version, which was considered for The Supremes A' Go-Go, the Detroit Strings were mixed into the track.

For Martha's version, HDH held off the band on the mixing board to allow only a guitar and chime intro before dissolving into a heavy rhythm before Martha starts singing.

Hitch Hike - Marvin Gaye; Martha & The Vandellas.

This one was really interesting as Martha and the Vandellas did the back-up on Marvin Gaye's version. Then they used the same tape when Martha re-recorded it for DANCE PARTY.

Diana Ross orig track for Time and Love....issued on the Touch LP with Jeans lead...Touch is my fav Supremes LP but I hate that song....the only version I ever heard that I liked somewhat [[and there were many of this song....lots of Pop vocalists recorded it) was Laura Nyro's....
