INTRODUCTION

"Motorcity Dance Party" is an exciting 3-disc, 60-track fest of some of Motorcity's finest! With 20 tracks per disc, the sound quality is excellent. In fact, the versions included here sound more orchestral than ever before. At first, I wondered if these might be Ian Levine's latest remixes on which many of you have been reporting, but then I realized that this set was released in 2001 which immediately cancels that theory.
The original "Motorcity Dance Party" CDs were released in, I believe, 4 separate volumes. I checked the tracklist on two of them with my newly-acquired 3-CD, 60-track version. They are not at all similar. Some tracks are included on both sets but not in the same order, and there are likewise tracks unique to each set. I do know that at least one-third of the 60 tracks on this set were new to me which makes it all the more exciting!

I don't know what the previous versions sounded like, but the versions included here sound fantastic! I only wish that audio links including the mixes on this set were available on YouTube for inclusion here in this thread.

Once again, a big thanks to Kenny for his uploading services.

Thank you all for your support. Enjoy!

No Gary, it doesn't really sound like the Billy Griffin voice we know, does it....

But, when listening carefully, it's Billy G. singing 'in the style of' David Ruffin...and surprisingly well....as well as contributing to the background voices.

A neat little recording!

Track also features on 'The Best Of Motorcity Vol. 8'.....

Ian Levine recorded a much greater number of tracks on Brenda Holloway, than were released within the lifespan of Motorcity Records.

I think many were recorded quite a long time after Motorcity label folded, but unsure exactly when.

I expect Soren will know, as I think he posted some details on another thread.

As so often happens here [!], I can't immediately locate my copy of 'My Love Is Your Love' by Brenda, to definitely identify....but it is likely to be the same track as featured on that album, which I think was released in 2003.

Westgrand, funny you should mention Brenda Holloway's 2-CD "My Love Is Your Love" set! Only yesterday, I discovered that this set even exists! Equally exciting is the fact that I discovered a NM copy from a U.S. seller on Discogs for only $10.00!

Gary,

Assuming you have, or are soon ordering it, then you will certainly enjoy it....

Although you may notice that Brenda's voice does sound a little strained at times.

Every time I play 'You Made Me So Very Happy', I hear it....but hardly surprising, given all those songs to complete.....

I know all the songs listed above on the Holloway CD were Motorcity, not Motown, recordings. But has it ever been determined that out of all the Motown artists, Holloway must have recorded the most songs that never saw the light of day at the time? I'm sure Blinky sets the record for the longest period likely that any songs [[or entire albums) remained in the vaults, but Holloway seems to be especially prolific during her Motown years, even though it only yielded one album [[though I guess there were two in the UK).

Does anyone know?

'Don't Forget The Motorcity' Artists A-Z has over 100 recordings listed for Brenda.

I haven't thoroughly checked against the listings for other artists but, for 'the most songs that never saw the light of day at the time', simple maths leads me to think that Brenda, and a number of several dozen of her recordings, certainly seems to fit into that category.

I wonder if the session costs for all that number [as I believe would be the case] are still being deducted from royalties....if, indeed, any are still due......

I vaguely recall an interview with Brenda many years ago where she spoke about how much she still owed in recording costs. It was in one of those magazines like IN THE BASEMENT or CHATBUSTERS. She said something like "they'll never get it while I'm alive." It sounded like they took a bit of her royalties periodically to pay off the debt.

Yes Reese, that does sound familiar.

And a similar process to that with the written word, when an advance is paid by the publisher to the writer before their work is printed. The publisher calculates the size of the advance based on an estimate of profit and loss, and the financial risk involved.

No further royalties are received by the writer until the total of agreed income from each sale has first matched the advance paid to them.

Interesting......because Motown must have felt Brenda had a significant potential for success, to have recorded so much on her.

In the event, sales of Brenda's singles never matched those of her very first release, 'Every Little Bit Hurts'......

Reese & Westgrand - I'm surprised about that. I would have thought that Brenda's "When I'm Gone" would have been her biggest seller, as it was among the first releases to grace the hot, newly-created "Motown Sound". I know that hearing it on the radio just once was all it took for me to race to the record store to buy it.

Gary,

After listening to my own set, a quick review, with some notes on my own findings.....

* Looks like these three discs were later made available, in 2010, digital only, with the title Motorcity Soulful Stompers Vols 1-3

* The majority of tracks appear to be the same as those originally released, with the exception of the following:-

* The Andantes: 'Little Darlin' : I cannot immediately locate this one, to compare. I may have missed it.....or, if it was recorded 1989-1992, it may have remained unreleased at that time....or was even recorded later.

ditto remarks with:

[I]Pat Lewis: 'Sending Out An S.O.S.'
Sisters Love: 'Saturday Night, Sunday Morning'
Saundra Edwards: 'Put Yourself In My Place'
The Andantes: 'Why Am I Loving You'

* Brenda Holloway: 'He's My Kinda Fellow' and 'My Love Is Your Love'
taken from album 'My Love Is Your Love', recorded after the original Motorcity project

* Barbara Randolph: 'I Got A Feeling'. This is not the original Motorcity release, which has a different arrangement. This version is much truer to the original Motown recording, and has a new background, with what at least does sound like real instruments. A more natural sound.

* Earl Van Dyke: 'Six By Six'. Not the original Motorcity release. Far more punch, organ more prominent. New background, which is closer to the Motown original...and does not feature vocals by The Andantes.

* New backgrounds added to all the following:

Frances Nero: 'Keep On Loving Me'

Freda Payne: 'Band Of Gold':

G. C. Cameron: 'It's A Shame':

Herman Griffin: 'Not One Chance In A Million'

Kim Weston: 'Helpless'

Martha Reeves & The Vandellas: 'Heat Wave'
[this track also features on the 'Soul Giants' set]

Ronnie McNeir: 'Lucky Number'

Westgrand, I've learned that Motorcity mixes can be just as varied and confusing as Motown's. After all of these years, I know that Motown hits were typically released in three versions:

1) MONO 45 mix [[cut HOT to jump out at you when heard on AM radio)
2) MONO album mix [[mostly identical to the 45 mix but somewhat smoother)
3) STEREO mix [[Oh, brother! Could mean almost anything. Sometimes sounded great; sometimes sounded bad with the back-up vocals on one channel, horns and strings on the opposite channel with too much separation between the two. What bothered me most was when the Stereo version eliminated handicaps and/or strings. Case in point:

1) Mary Wells' "Honey Boy". The MONO version features handclaps which, to me, are hot! The Stereo version eliminates them altogether.

2) Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston's "What Good Am I Without You" [[not to be confused with Gladys' song of the same title which is a different song altogether). The MONO version of Marvin & Kim's track features handclaps, while the Stereo mix deletes them.

3) I think the most dramatic example of the difference between Motown's MONO & STEREO versions is Marvin Gaye's "Little Darling [[I Need You)" in which the. MONO mix contains beautiful string passages which add emotional depth to the track, whereas the STEREO version eliminates the strings altogether -- robbing the song of nearly all emotion. To me, those empty gaps stick out like a sore thumb.

Well, I've noticed that Ian did the same thing with his Motorcity productions. One example is Carolyn Crawford's "That's How Heartaches Are Made". The version on the Various Artists "Best Of Motorcity [[Vols. 1-20)" CD features string passages which are a big part of the emotional intensity for me. The version on her "Heartaches" CD, however, mostly buries the strings in the mix, thus robbing the emotional intensity for me. I've noticed the same thing happening with some other Motorcity mixes. It seems like the hotter mixes are contained within the V.A. "Best Of Motorcity" CDs as opposed to the individual artist CDs.

Westgrand, my NM copy of Brenda's "My Love Is Your Love" 2-CD set arrived a few days ago. All I can say is that I LOVE IT! Nearly every one of the 39 tracks is a winner! [[No, I didn't notice Brenda's voice straining at all throughout the entire set.)

What I DID discover on eBay is a Brenda Holloway live-performance CD titled "Together". The entire 14-track set is live versions of her Motown recordings. Brenda is in excellent vocal form, as are the 3 back-up girls. The band -- Snake Davies & The Suspicions -- are surprisingly good [[despite a bum, sour note on a very few of the tracks. Here's the tracklist:

1) Introduction by Snake Davies & The Suspicions of which one of the two instrumentals is Jr. Walker's "Tune Up" followed by "The Duck".

ENTER BRENDA

2) "Just Look What You've Done"
3) "Starting The Hurt All Over Again"
4) "How Many Times Did You Mean It"
5) "Lonely Boy"
6) "You Can Cry On My Shoulder"
7) Every Little Bit Hurts"
8) "When I'm Gone"
9) "My World Is Crumbling"
10) "You've Made Me So Very Happy"
11) "Think It Over [[Before You Break My Heart)" [[aka "Reconsider")
12) "You're Gonna Love My Baby"
13) "I'm So Glad" [[aka "The Right Track")
14) "Reconsider" [[Reprise)

I consider this CD a real find!

I think that's a safe bet, Kenny. Can you imagine how frustrating it must have been for Brenda to work so hard recording that giant mass of works throughout the decade -- only to have them lie dormant in the vaults without release AND to be expected to pay for all of that studio time. A royal screw, indeed!
