^Agreed! Just look at the short list of monster tunes listed in the above article. I can't think of a Carl Davis produced song I don't like. I look forward to reading details of how the music was made.

Last week I was listening to Jackie Wilson's Carl Davis produced LP, Higher And Higher again and thinking how well-crafted that album is. James Jamerson on bass too! Jamerson breaks away on the tearjerker "Those Heartaches"--just for a few dramatic seconds--but,

Does anyone know if there is a decent biography on Curtis Mayfield? Given his contributions as artist, writer, producer, mentor, etc...his wisdom, and indomitable spirit following his tragic accident--I would expect there to be at least one comprehensive story of his life...

Hi sunshineoacd, the only biography I know of is Curtis Mayfield - Never Give Up, published 1993 by Peter Burns Make sure you read the reviews on these Amazon links, as the opinions vary.

Peter Burns book is a good and informed read and worth buying in my opinion.As it published by Sanctuary, who I think no longer exist- it is worth getting now.

^Thanks for the Curtis Mayfield info. I will look for the Burns bio. Still, I'm surprised there is only one book on him--and published some years before his death.

I do have this DVD, 'Movin' On Up' [[2008) which I thought was well done. I especially liked Johnny Pate's comments.

Fred Cash said very recently that The Impressions had a live show with full orchestra taped for DVD, I think the recording was made about two years ago...anybody know anything about this?

i got mine from the UK too via Book Depositary...same ...no CD....i emailed Carls website....and he explained that the accompanying CD is only included if you order the book direct through the website....but he offered to send me the CD free if we went 50/50 on the postage....i paid $5.50 via paypal and it just arrived........i'm getting a tee shirt made.."I STRUCK A DEAL WITH CARL DAVIS"...... :D

John, I ordered mine through the website, and am waiting delivery, so I hope it comes with the Cd. Postage was $6.50 or there abouts. I also requested a signed copy so i'll see what cheek gets me.

I guess I missed out on the CD but I've got those songs on other disc. Still would have been nice to have it though. I've been reading the book and it's very interesting. Again, being from Chicago it means that much more to me as there are many references to locations throughout the city where Carl worked grew up and owned homes in. I'm almost at the half way mark and it's just amazing the amount of information that is packed into the book. It's not a big thick book but they make the most out of the pages. I like the book very much and am glad that Carl is still around. Does anyone know how he's doing regarding the illness mentioned in the Chicago Sun-Times article? I hope everything goes well regarding purchasing the building for the museum. That would be nice as I have always felt that the city has negelected a part of it's history in letting condos take over the area where record row use to be and not have any type monument letting new generations know what use to be there. How about some post on how others like the book.

Finished reading the book and I must say that a lot was packed into those few pages. One thing easily noticeable is that Carl Davis isn't shy about saying he did this and that. It was very nice reading something about Major Lance, Billy Butler and Otis Leavile. Also, unless I somehow missed it, there was no mention of the death of Curtis Mayfield. If so, that was odd. Its a book that I will look forward to reading again for all the information packed withing those pages. There are a few pictures at the end of the book but not nearly enough and too many of the Chilites. It would have been nice to see pictures of the companies up and down Record Row and some of the other artist mentioned in the book.
