I got word today on YouTube that Dave Whitehouse of the Underdogs has passed away. It was his nephew who left a comment. You gotta credit Berry Gordy with wanting and trying to expand Motown's horizons by signing rock bands and Dave Whitehouse had a pretty soulful voice for a young kid from the suburbs. It's too bad Motown couldn't have worked with building up the Underdogs' profile a little more.

Sorry to hear about Dave from The Underdogs. And while I agree with you that it's a shame that Motown couldn't get a major hit from the group, the company didn't have any luck with White Rock [or Soul] Artists until Rare Earth. RIP Dave Whitehouse.

So true. I guess it's like they say, timing is everything.

Thanks for this- nice comprehensive list. I've heard a few of these. Motown had a really bad habit of signing groups and then ditching them after a single or two. This group had potential, but things were moving extremely fast at Motown around this time.

One of my favorite videos [[wink). Now I know the music backing here is pure Funk Brothers. I came across an old interview where Dave or one of the other guys said that's how Motown operated - they wanted everything to have that signature Motown sound. I also notice with the unreleased material, it seems another standard Motown Operating Procedure was being used with the band: focus only on the lead singer and ditch the rest. Dave had a fantastic soulful voice for someone so young, so I could see Motown producers wanting to work with him. Still it's too bad we didn't get the hear much of the other guys on record. In the end, I believe most of the guys moved on anyway, going off to college or starting families.

I do love The Underdogs’ version of "Love Gone's Bad". Such a cool track
I need to check out their other cuts some more.

Definitely. These guys get overlooked pretty much in the history of Motown but they were one of the players in the effort to break into Rock.

Definitely my favourite Underdogs' track.
If you're going to take on a Temptations' classic, better to do it in a completely different style.

RIP Dave Whitehouse
