As I was comparing prices for this new release, I came upon another 3 CD set with 60 tracks for about $5.00 less. Not to cause any problems for this release, but wouldn't that earlier one be the better buy?

Yes it would be the better choice provided that it's from UMC and has all the correct versions of Dusty's best work.
