As determined via a search of past postings on the MF, a total of 63-2 albums on one CD were released in the 1980's.

The first letter of the assigned catalog number was M/T/G Motown, Tamla, or Gordy. As far as I can determine the series ran from MCD-08000 to MCD-08058 then MCD-08159 to MCD-08162. A total issuance of 63 CDs.

I had forgotten about the Two Classics Albums One CD release from 1991
Diana Ross Presents the Jackson Five / ABC. It's catalog number was
Motown 440-014-380-2. I wonder during 1991 if this was the only one
2 albums on 1 CD that was released? It seems odd that only an isolated
one was released.

Can anyone shed any light on this whether or not this was the one and only released in 1991 or were there others?

It is extremely difficult to keep a record of the catalog numbers on CDs as one can do on 45s and albums. Does anyone know if there is a master listing or if none exists. I. E. Motown label 45s run consecutively, Gordy, and the rest the same.

Any help would be appreciated. It has always baffled me on their CD releases as there seems to be empty space vs the vinyl which rarely had any number empty spaces. Did they skip numbers?

Thanks.

The early 2on1 series from the 80s is an easy one. I call it the 8000 series.

The first thing to remember though is that there were only 62 releases not 63. This is because 08159 didn't get released [[talk is that it was to be Diana Ross & The Supremes "Live at The Copa" and "We Remember Sam Cooke" but it didn't see the light of day.

The second thing to remember is that different countries had the same series, numbered in their own sequence - such as Europe ZD7xxxx and Japan R32M-xxxx. However, not all the ones released in the USA were released in these other areas [[for example Al Green, Duane Eddy etc).

You can see at least one example of each one here - https://www.flickr.com/photos/cookephotography/albums/72157637231731375

In terms of the later 2on1 series you mention there was more than one released -

These Motown J5 2on1 albums saw release in Japan where they were released as mini-LPs having a replica LP cover for each album - so Diana Ross Presents and ABC had their own covers, even though there was only 1 CD. In fact the "Christmas Album" and "Live In Japan" were individual CDs rather than 2on1. You can see the Japanese seried here.

There have been several other 2on1 releases over the years from Motown, Soul Music Records, Expansion etc - some examples - https://www.flickr.com/photos/cookephotography/albums/72177720298158997

but a major series was in the UK in 2001/2002 which had excellent sound,You can see these here - https://www.flickr.com/photos/cookephotography/albums/72157626901923108

As regards numbering sequences it can be trickly because they used the same sequence for CDs LPs and Cassettes - some albums were only vinyl for example so there isn't an equivalent CD number which means a gap in the CD sequence but when you reckon in other formats they're all there [[the 5000 series speings to mind here).

More difficult seems to be the Polygram) years where there do seem to be gaps in the numbers that I've not been able to reconcile [[these are typically 31453-0xxx-2 and 530 xxx-2 for CDs).

Thank you. I certainly learned a lot from what you revealed. I hope that others also have learnt something as I did. Appreciate it.
