Well, folks! It's been a wonderful set of shows over the last 3 weeks with Mary Wilson, Susaye Greene, Scherrie Payne, Andy Skurow and George Solomon, as we aired and celebrated "The Supremes...Let Yourself Go"Vol 2 boxset. And I thank them all for joining me and you and sharing their thoughts about their careers, their music and this great boxset.

Well...it occurred to me that I have never aired [[for various reasons)...or celebrated "The Supremes...The Jean Terrell Years" Vol 1. So, Tuesday night I will do that...especially since this boxset has some of my absolute favorite Supremes recordings. Can I top that? I think I CAN. A gentleman who was exquisitely involved in the producing of this remarkable compliation of JMC/JML recordings will join me live...from Connecticut...George Solomon! George has graciously agreed to join me for most all of the show to talk about the production of and the music in this set. I want to thank George for doing this for us. So join George Solomon...and me...on "Nightflight"...on WOMR 92.1 FM Provincetown and WFMR 91.3 FM Orleans and streaming live worldwide in digital stereo at www.womr.org [[http://www.womr.org)
Thanks!

Here goes:
Are there in any outtakes from Floy Joy & The Jimmy Webb?

Do a multi lead with Jean Mary & Cindy exsist for Floy Joy as performed on the Merv Griffin Show

Never Can Say Goodbye, is that just Jean, Mary & Cindy on vocals and was it recorded before the J5

Are there any additional vocalist on the Touch lp ie Clydie King on Nathan Jones

Is there anymore Mary Wilson leads in the vault, if so how many

Thanks in advance John and have a great show

i'm still thinking of some JMCL questions. those were real good ones, rod_rick. i would like to ask George if he knows about any "Cindy parts" unreleased from FUNNY GIRL sessions, or G.I.T. sessions, or unreleased JMC sessions? parts, for instance, like she had in "Automatically Sunshine". something tells me George has most likely listened to many of the reels as he has worked with the vaults for a good while....since the early 80's?

I thought the three for the Final were amazing but this one should be too. I am also a huge fan of the Jean years and would be interested in knowing George's feelings on if there really is enough finished quality material in the vault to have a 70's lost and Found.

also off subject, any More Hits news. perhaps you can have George on again when this set is released.

Ramone Verona

Yes!
Please have George comment on unreleased tracks from the yet to be re-released albums like "Funny Girl", "Farewell", "GIT on Broadway", and with Jean-Mary-Cindy-Lynda.
Solo tracks from Mary during DRATS and beyond that he may have heard.
George must have listened to something really cool that remains in the vaults that fans have not talked about?!

Good evening mj-

Looking forward to another spectacular show; thanks for taking a "step back" and bringing the "Jean Terrell Years" back into the spotlight! So excited to hear George's stories and insight; he truly is a gem and I appreciate listening to him [[and Andy!) Thanks mj for featuring these two great Motown historians.

A couple of questions for GS, if you have time.....

1) There are two great Mary Wilson-lead songs from the Jean Terrell years [[from the "Right On" era), "If You Let Me" and "Send Him To Me". Are there any plans to ever release these two, possibly on a "Lost and Found" 70's set?

2) Of all of the Supremes [[or Motown) releases you've been involved in, is there one that sticks out as your "favorite"?

P.S. In regards to George's "Reflections" LP, there are actual professional "peelers" out there that can remove the "top" cover. :)

Hi Johnny & George,

Just curious George if now you look back at this first box or the fabulous special editions of the albums you've done and say gosh I wish we had added this or changed this? Maybe found something in the vault after you got the CDs out that you think would further enhance the overall listening experience....

Hi George,
Looking at the "This Is The Story" and "Let Yourself Go" boxsets, and respecting the great love and care that went into them, I 'm curious. The Jean Terrell years uses a flat finish paper that somewhat mutes the colors/brightness of the photos, many of which were readily available elsewhere. Also the number of photos used is considerably less than the number used for the Scherrie/Susaye years.
The Final Sessions uses a shiny, glossy paper that displays the photos perfectly, and , in addition, there are many unfamiliar or alternate pictures from familiar photo sessions.
Was this a choice of the art[[work) department in both cases? Was the use of glossy paper a decision based on comments made on the type of paper used for the first set?
For future sets, is it possible to use glossy paper for the booklets?

With regards to the possibility of Cindy being on the Jimmy Webb, "This Is The Story " lists the likely dates for those recordings to have taken place between March 1972-June 1972. Many "Floy Joy' tracks state that background vocals were recorded February 17 & 18, 1972. Very interesting......

Do we know if there was a set track listing for the "Promises Kept" album? It did indeed have a record number, and is listed on a Motown brochure for retailers, but doesn't show any album art. But do we know that it was an entirely recorded LP, ready to be mastered?

if you have time to get to this.. and i know this is a bit off topic.. but i'm wondering how they deal with outside companies doing reissues of motown material, especially after hearing, in the last several shows, how hard it is to get catalog material on the release schedule. this, in particular, is in reference to lesser selling albums that may not be viable for universal to release themselves [[ie. mary wilson's solo lp, partners etc..), but for smaller reissue labels like reel music, BBR, light in the attic, funkytown grooves etc.. to license and reissue. i'm sure the labels go to you, but are you guys able to go to these labels and suggest projects that maybe you guys are unable to get off the ground?

You talking about Ace? Ace decide what they want and then ask if it is possible. Universal may suggest how to make the project better but Ace are the ones paying. It's not all that different from any other business. If you pay, you get and if you dont pay, you dont get.

George,

I love the alternates because for me, as a younger fan who never got the privledge of seeing the Supremes live [[they disbanded when I was 18 months old) its a way of getting new performances and material of my favorite group. The work you Andy and Harry have done to find all the lost songs, alternates, and remixes have enhanced my fandom a hundred times over. The boxes in particular have enchanced my appreciation of the talent and material post Diana. Keep them coming. Love that there's still even more in the vault to be released and to have my credit card in hand to buy....

Since someone mentioned the filming of Farewell, I checked my DVD's and found the small clip that was featured on the 21st American Music Awards. I'm thinking maybe Dick Clark Productions filmed only a small portion of the concert for the sole purpose of showing a clip on his show?? The clip originally aired on American Bandstand in 1970 I believe...and then reprised on the AMA's...so he must own the rights to it?? Here is a screen cap [[there was no sound):

yes, ace/kent too. i knew they'd have to pay to license it, but i've noticed a positive shift in terms of the amount and quality of these reissues lately. i'm wondering if perhaps there's a change in universal's involvement/approach to these, especially now that a lot of them include unreleased material, which likely comes from their own vault research. somehow i had the impression [[whether rightly or wrongly) that until recently it seemed, motown/universal rarely let other labels issue or reissue full collections of motown product [[let alone unreleased material).

Times change and we have to accept them....even if it is hard at first. And you are right, a few years ago the prospect of another label releasing several unreleased Motown tracks was unheard of.

What I find unusual is that it is usually a Brit that is pushing projects that involve unreleased 60's Motown tracks [[except for the Supremes of course!). Why is it that America ignores its home grown talent? Make no mistake, we Brits are in awe of what you guys have.

Mary, Cindy, & Lynda at the Copa..... Lynda's performance debut with the Supremes was with Mary & Cindy in Hawaii. According to photos attributed to those performances [[and available in a youtube video), they are wearing the silver fringed pantsuits.
In her second book, 'Supreme Faith' Mary Wilson recounts the confusion [[Jean's illness, Motown's tour/cancel tour without Jean response) leading up to these appearances in April of 1972 [[which were only a small part-the last few days) of what was to have obviously been a much longer island tour of performances.
When Jean recovers, she performs most of the first week [[June1-5, 1972) of a run at the Copa, then gets sick again. Mary recruits Cindy for the Saturday and Sunday performances and states... " We had only the gowns we'd brought with us, and Cindy's pregnancy was showing, so the fit wasn't perfect."
In 'Hot Wax, City Cool & Solid Gold' , pg 122, there is a photo of Mary, Cindy & Lynda wearing the tropical lilac gowns with feather boas) with the caption "Temporary group of Supremes. Left to right: expectant Cindy Birdsong, Birdsong's replacement Lynda Lawrence IN HER PERFORMACE DEBUT, Mary Wilson.
Might this photo be rather from the Copa performances and thereby, not actually be Lynda's public performance debut as a Supreme? Cindy does seem to fit Mary's description of her physical condition in these gowns moreso than in the silver fringed worn in Hawaii.

Big kudos and drag queen kisses to mj for another bombastic "Nighflight". Like so many others, I really have been enjoying these interviews; thank you so much for coordinating all of these spectacular guests. I truly appreciate you asking my questions and thanks to George for answering them. It's so interesting [[and refreshing!) to get some of the "behind the scenes" info, straight from the source[[s).

I am hoping these interviews will be available for some sort of download? They will make "supreme" companions to the "Jean" and "Final" sets.

Anyway, big applause again to all involved [[Andy, George, Mary, Scherrie, Susaye), and especially mj. You are a gem. *smile*

If you look at Mary Wilson's MySpace page, you'll find photographs of the Mary, Cindy and Lynda line-up, both in Hawaii and at the Copa. I've seen the pics many times, but outside of the silver-fringe, I don't recall what they are wearing......

much appreciation for the interview with George! sorry about the misinformation in my question. i meant to say "like Cindy's part in "Precious Little Things", but i thought you'd both figure out that what i was asking referred to anything unreleased on Cindy. and you both did! George, you mentioned the outtake from the Floy Joy sessions that had Diana's name attached to it. could you please give us the name of this track? thanks.

the track list George provided for the STYNGUT album was great. wish we could get one for the "live" in Vegas LP from JMC that you spoke about! i know you stated that the recordings have yet to be found and Jean mentioned they were doing it or had done it.

for midnightjonny, you never mentioned just why it took you so long to feature this set [[TITS). were you, at that time, waiting for the second volume to come out?

So who recorded the whole show? I missed the first hour or so.

Anyone feel like helping an old man in distress???

Maybe George Michaels can help you in the restroom, Xtown!
I hear he likes to help men in distress! :)

In the first hour, George played a rare Velvelettes LP just found in the vaults.
I'd send you my recorded copy, but as Florence Ballard once said: "We were singing and dancing to it....and the tape broke"!
Maybe some thick glue~~~~~~ ;)

Look again. I was mistaken. It is Jean , Mary & Lynda.

I noticed that later but figured you would, too.
It's all good, as they say!

marybrewster....you are MOST kind....and sweet to say such things. I did some of the coordination...Andy coordinated the Supremes, and I'm grateful to him for that. Like you, I love the behind the scenes stuff...it helps to put the Motown Story together in a more complete way.
As far as the interviews being downloaded....the podcasts have started to be available...the first 2 have been uploaded. Check out the "Nightflight" Motown interviews ...the podcasts" thread. and I hope you enjoy them. The next ones to be available are my 3 Velvelettes interviews...from 2001, 2004, and 2007.
marybrewster...thank you so much! You're a pearl. *grin*

It was a funny story when George was talking about when he saw the photo chosen for his "Best of The Supremes & The Four Tops" and it was DRATS with the Temptations from the back of the TCB album.
How the suits said they weren't going to change the photo because "nobody would notice".
It was both the wrong Supremes and then the wrong male group, altogether.
I really laughed when George said he told the suits that the people might notice that the "4" Tops had "5" members!
Ha Ha Ha Ha!!
Kind of scary to think that Motown hired people who thought so little of the fans and their devotions.
I still sometimes think that there must be some of those folks left; who continually delay the fine projects George and Andy and Harry do.
Letting the fans know about a project and then start/stopping them for years.
Way to kill enthusiasm and spending habits.

Ramone-You hear right about George Michael but I need a beef steak not a MISTAKE!

Now that Velvelette find is a completely different ball game. You got me there and I concede defeat!
