A review of a new Off Broadway Musical "TREVOR: THE MUSICAL" that just opened that may be of interest to Diana fans.

'I'm coming out': 'Trevor,' featuring Diana Ross songs

Bill Canacci

Do you know where you're going to?

Well, some theater fans will certainly be heading to Stage 42 in New York to see "Trevor: The Musical."

This off-Broadway show takes place in 1981, and is about a charming and imaginative 13-year-old boy who is obsessed with Diana Ross. His fellow students at Lakeview Junior High are not sure what to make of him. They know he's different. "Weird" is how they often describe him.

But Trevor [[Holden William Hagelberger) doesn't seem to have a problem with who he is. He likes to be creative and is super excited when he has the chance to choreograph the football team's big number at the talent show. No question about it, this is going to be much more than just guys running around in pink tutus.

As the musical goes on, Trevor struggles with understanding his identity, and his feelings for a certain boy.

"Trevor" has its moments for sure. Hagelberger is very good in the title role and has no problem playing fun and fabulous. He also brings out Trevor's nervousness, fear and uncertainty.

As Diana Ross, Yasmeen Sulieman is perfection. She has the look, the attitude, the voice — and the outfits! Kudos to costume designer Mara Blumenfeld. One only wishes Sulieman was on stage more. She is the best part of the show, and this theatergoer would have preferred to hear full versions of Ross' hits.

Sammy Dell does fine as Pinky, the star football player. Unlike many of the guys, his character actually befriends Trevor and gets to know him, and Dell and Hagelberger have good chemistry.

Diego Lucano as Pinky's bad boy friend Jason gets noticed almost immediately for his dancing. Josh Prince's choreography is another highlight.

Echo Deva Picone plays the mean girl well. Isabel Medina shows off Frannie's good heart. Aaron Alcaraz has a nice moment with Hagelberger in Act II.

At 2 hours, 15 minutes, including an intermission, the predictable show seems a bit long. Certain original songs serve as filler, and none are particularly memorable.

Still, "Trevor" is important, and may even help kids trying to figure out who they are.

And that's worth singing about:

Sounds like an inspiring musical.
Looking forward to seeing "Trevor"

Before Lady Gaga's "Monsters", there were the "Musicals", inspired by Diana Ross.
Every Ms.Ross album released was an event, including her latest album, "Thank You", which is a musical about love!

TREVOR was a fantastic short! I just wonder how you flush out a two and a half hour play from a 20 minute movie?
