The “Godfather of Bass Guitar,” Robert Wilson of the legendary Tulsa jazz and funk group the Gap Band, died Sunday in Los Angeles. He was 53, confirmed his publicist and manager, Don Jackson, in a late-night Sunday phone call to the Tulsa World.

Wilson died from a massive heart attack in his home, Jackson said. His family became concerned about him when they didn’t receive their regular phone calls from him throughout the day. His adult son found Wilson's body on Sunday afternoon in Palmdale, Calif.

This has to be the worst year on record for R&B, Soul, and Funk legends. R.I.P. Robert.

RIP.

Even though I've always considered Burn Rubber a great example of a song that goes from 0 to 60. My fave Gap Band memory is sitting on a sofa with my aunt, watching my grandmother jump out of her chair to sing her "new" favorite song, "Oops Upside Your Head".....burned on the retina.

Like most Funk bands in the day....they gave you your money's worth live.

This is really sad, as you know Bootsy's brother, Phelps "Catfish" Collins just passed and Robert is their cousin. He will be missed. A true talent on electric bass thumpin it up!

I first discovered The GAP Band in '79 with "Shake", then "Oops Upside Your Head". Along with Slave & a few others, they were amongst my favorite groups fromabout 80 - 86. It's sad to hear that yet another of our icons has passed away & so young, at that.

My condolences to his family, friends & fans.

Robert Wilson - R.I.P.

Man, what a year for Soul & Funk music :[[

The Gap Band was absolutely one of my favorite bands and Robert Wilson was certainly one of the reason why. What were they without that bass thumping in their music? Wow. What a year. Sorry to hear this, and he was obviously the youngest of the group[[?) RIP Robert Wilson, may God Keep Your Soul...:[[

There is a good full page obit on Robert in todays [[UK) Independent newspaper.
It makes mention of his work with Norman Whitfield and his solo stuff for Lucky 7 [[the label set up by his nephew Frank Wilson).
