AP News:
Phoebe Snow, a bluesy singer, guitarist and songwriter whose "Poetry Man" was a defining hit of the 1970s but who then largely dropped out of the spotlight to care for her disabled daughter, has died.

Snow, who was nominated for best new artist at the 1975 Grammys, died Tuesday morning in Edison, N.J., from complications of a brain hemorrhage she suffered in January 2010, said Rick Miramontez, her longtime friend and public relations representative. She was 58.

Snow's manager, Sue Cameron, said the singer endured bouts of blood clots, pneumonia and congestive heart failure since her stroke.

"The loss of this unique and untouchable voice is incalculable," Cameron said. "Phoebe was one of the brightest, funniest and most talented singer-songwriters of all time and, more importantly, a magnificent mother to her late brain-damaged daughter, Valerie, for 31 years. Phoebe felt that was her greatest accomplishment.

So the daughter preceeded her in death from what I am reading above.

How sad! She was only 58!

It's so sad that she's gone so young. She was one of the most unique voices to ever come to our attention.

I'm not real familiar with her music, but I know she sang the theme song to "A Different World" during the first season. Never the less, may she RIP.

Such a loss. An amazingly talented singer and songsmith. Her talent was only exceeded by her humanity. Rest in peace Phoebe Snow and Thank You for the music [[especially "Harpo's Blues" and "Something Real").

Her life story is amazing, sometimes I wonder if on some level, she felt that once her daughter had passed, her work on this earth was done.

Never cared for "Poetry Man", but I did see her perform on the New York Rock & Soul Revue tour in '94 and liked what she did there. RIP, Phoebe, and thank you... :[[

I also dug her gospel-tinged duet with Paul Simon, "Gone at Last," from around 1976 [[featured on his "Still Crazy After All These Years" LP). Amazingly high notes at the end.

But I truly adored "Harpo's Blues."

RIP Phoebe, thank you for the great music.

I've been a fan of Phoebe's since Poetry Man. It was so beautiful and unique when it
dropped but she always proved she could do so many different things and she had so
much soul. She even showed us she could handle funk when she worked with Bernie
Worrell way back when and I loved her gutsy vocals on Don't Piss Me Off...

RIP, Phoebe, you're gone too soon...

Unfortunately, I never heard of a singer Phoebe Snow. The legendary Phoebe Snow, in case many readers do know about this institution, Phoebe Snow was an Erie Lackawanna crack passenger train operating between Hoboken, NJ and Chicago, Ill. Her last run was on November 27, 1966.

I loved this local Detroit TV station ID she did for WDIV-TV Channel 4 in 1980. There were short versions, including an uptempo disco version. I think it's inspirational.

Why does the "Go For It" song make me happy and sad at the same time?

First saw her when I was 15. It Looks Like Snow had just been released and she was opening for Herbie Hancock! Saw her at least three more times after that including this club date back in the early 80's. What an incredible voice. She'll be sorely missed.

Snow was born Phoebe Ann Laub [[http://extratv.warnerbros.com/topics/?s=Phoebe+Ann+Laub) in 1952 in New York City [[http://extratv.warnerbros.com/topics/?s=New+York+City). She changed her name after seeing an ad on the side of a train for a character called Phoebe Snow.

May she RIP. This was particularly sad news because Phoebe Snow often had such a hard and difficult struggle while living. Hopefully, she's found peace and rest at last.

I agree Kamasu Jr. She had a really hard time caring for her special needs daughter. Hopefully they are together again in the afterlife. The obviously really loved each other. Geez, Ms. Snow was SO talented. I thought her voice was so haunting.
