Claudine "Party Lights" Clark-also a talented musician. I read she did some gospel in the 80's; Yvonne Baker-lives in NY and refuses to discuss her past. Others?

Ruby of Ruby and the Romantics

Ruby Nash, last I heard, worked at a Goodwill store in Barberton, Ohio. Didn't Claudine Clark end up teaching music?

Claudine lived in Atlanta, GA, but I have no idea where she is. Sadly, her label couldn't follow-up the hit and she could've
had a promising career. She actually wrote "Party Lights", which was intended as the "B" side of "Disappointed".
Her lp had too many songs with the "Party" title, but her follow-up singles sounded nothing like the hit.
"Walkin' Through The Cemetary" was one.

I think I remember hearing that Ruby Nash said she had lost her singing voice. I am certain over the years she has been
encouraged to work the circuit. They did have quite a few big hits.

I do believe Ruby has appeared on PBS without the Romantics. I imagine Claudine did pretty well with the royalties-that song has had a long life.

I can't remember any of their names. But the tall one married Tamyra Gray of AMERICAN IDOL fame a few years back. I think he may be working as a writer/producer now.

The lead singer fell on hard times for a bit. He got married, fathered some children, and gained a lot of weight. The last time I saw him he was on a VH1 reality series that put together members of various disbanded groups, and combined them for another shot at fame.

I interviewed Ruby back in the summer of '08 for A Touch of Classic Soul.

Much of what has been written about the group is erroneous. i.e. there was never a second set of Romantics. Marv Goldberg cleared up a lot of things when he interviewed her several months before I did [[thank God). She's still living in Akron and is doing fine. All but one of the Romantics is deceased, and the one still living has cancer. She had no interest in getting back out here on the nostalgia circuit without her original singing partners.

Also, I'm happy to say that contrary to published reports, she gets royalties twice a year from "Our Day Will Come" and other songs.

Dear Marc, that is wonderful to hear! They were an excellent group! My favorite: Young Wings Can Fly [[Higher Than You Know).

luke
04-13-2011, 05:21 PM
Marc-didnt she do a PBS show?

mellow_q
04-13-2011, 05:53 PM
I think she did mention PBS having to twist her arm to do one of their shows [[I'll have to dig up the tape of the interview to verify), but that was it.

Someone in Vegas did an interview with Bettye Swaan back in 2005. If you enter her name into Wikipedia, there is a link to it.

Although I think most of the artists are still around, I absolutely LOVED the quality of the music that the Ichiban label put out in the 80s and 90s, and I hated it when it folded. Trudy Lynn's stuff for them was fantastic, Francine Reed and Sandra Hall were great blueswomen, and even Millie Jackson put out a couple of decent albums for them.

Interesting thread...

Below is a link to a nice story about Lester Chambers of The Chambers Brothers. He was recently homeless until word of his plight got out. Supposedly, even Yoko Ono stepped up to help him. He will be honored at Yohsis in San Francisco later this month [[see link below)

http://www.sweetrelief.org/events/lester-chambers-yoshis

Sweet Relief is a organization that assists musicians who have fallen on hard times. The older artists/musicians who made little to NO money back in the day are especially hit hard.

Another artist I've wondered about is Sugar Pie DeSanto, who a few years back tragically lost her husband when her home burned down in Oakland, CA.

You mean MDLT-Willis....I've been fascinated with them since I learned of them about a year ago. The maddening thing is that there is nothing on the net about them post 1974! Someone claimed to have known them on a Youtube message board and I wrote him. he replied:

Mr. June, I used to follow them around back in the day. The correct name was Carl Holmes and the Commanders who later changed the name to the Sherlock Holmes Experience or something like that. I came across his niece about 10 years ago and she said he had arthritis in his hands and was no longer playing the guitar. At one point he had a girl in his band that looked and sounded just like James Brown! Seriously! Besides the band that McFadden & Whitehead had, Carl Holmes was #2 in my book! Irene Cara.

I know, I recall once while researching her, about a decade or over ago, on her website read she founded a young group called "Hot Caramel" or so, but it is quite evidently plain as day that that was a side project that no one bought.

Which my opinion, quite a shame, because from her rocking "Hot Lunch Jam", adorable "Anyone Can See", bombastic "The Dream", drifting high from "What A Feeling", to over the top "Girlfriends", she shoulda, my opinion, been a Whitney Houston-level star. But instead, to the majority public, two-time hit wonder, then completely disappeared after the mid-late eighties.

Not even an occassional "I'm still around" new album, like Lionel Richie, O'Jays, Earth, Wind, and Fire, Isley Brothers, Temptations, and Chaka Khan does.
