I was playing a new Neil Diamond collection today [[courtesy of that recent Amazon sale) and an interesting trivia question popped into my head. I promise I will not drag it out and if no one guesses, I will reveal the answer in a day or two.

So even though neither is considered a "soul" singer, can you figure out what Neil Diamond and Bobbie Gentry have in common?

Other than BIG hair, songwriting talent & great voices, hmmm. Something to do with background singers, perhaps?

I'm taking a guess: both Neil Diamond & Bobbie Gentry are retired from the Music Business.

Nope. The item in question is something that to the best of my knowledge ONLY the two of them share in common. Think Bobbie's biggest hit and one of Neil's lesser ones.

Odes to both Billie Jo and ET [['Heartlight') ?

Good guess but not what I had in mind.

Here is a hint for this Thanksgiving Day [[hope everyone has a great one by the way) and then if necessary, I will give the answer tomorrow........

....Think of one of the many ladies in Neil's songs....but NOT Cracklin Rosie, NOT Holly Holy, and NOT Sweet Caroline.

Nope but since I have a whole day of sports-watching ahead of me, I will go ahead and reveal the answer here early in the day.

Drum roll please........

I was referring to Neil's song "Desiree." Both that song and Bobbie's "Ode to Billie Joe" feature stories that take place on the same date, the third of June.

oh I can think of easily a half dozen other songs that mention that date.

No seriously, that's a very clever one. Well done! :)
