I'm sure some of you watched the Soul America program on BBC4 last week. Some great clips and some new interviews including with Mary Wilson.

One segment talked about Motown. The angle being portrayed was that The Supremes were more pop than soul.

Mary Wilson seemed to suggest that The Supremes were purely pop and said something like "The Supremes barely had an R&B hit".

This is palpably untrue. The Supremes were massively successful in the R&B chart in the 1960s. They had 7#1 singles and 7 #1 albums. In fact, if you rank artists by chart performance The Supremes were more successful in the R&B chart than Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops and The Miracles. Only The Temptations were more successful amongst Motown acts.

So, the historical truth is surely that the R&B market loved The Supremes back in the 1960s.....
